Requirements

  • Knowledge of various hand and power tools.
  • Skilled in using tools and equipment in maintenance and repair work.
  • Skilled in operations and preventive maintenance of vehicles and/or mechanized equipment.
  • Ability to maintain and/or repair bridges, signs, roadways and/or other highway structures.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to work from lift equipment and ladders, climb stairs, and work at heights of 50 feet or greater.
  • Ability to push, pull and lift 50 pounds from ground level.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl and/or bend on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to work in high volume traffic.
  • Ability to walk on various unlevel terrains.
  • A Class E driver's license is required at the time of hire.
  • A CDL Class B License Instructional Permit is required within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CLD Class B license with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.
  • This position requires a valid Class E driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
  • To be considered for employment, applicants must meet the qualifications outlined in Title 49 CFR Part 391.11.

Responsibilities

  • Performs all related tasks associated with the maintenance and repair of various highway structures and other roadway assets. Requires using a variety of tools, preparing materials, equipment and maintaining communication with local units, coworkers and/or other crews.
  • Train new employees by providing guidance and technical assistance. Assumes duties of supervisor in his/her absence as required to include completion of daily crew sheets.
  • Operates and performs preventive maintenance on a variety of vehicles, mechanized equipment and power tools.
