The NSICU 9L at Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) provides comprehensive patient care to adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. It is a 29-bed unit with all private rooms, three negative pressure rooms, and two fully equipped nursing stations with central monitoring. Common diagnoses include subarachnoid hemorrhage, subdural hematoma, epidural hematoma, spinal cord injuries, Code Stroke, head trauma, intracranial hemorrhages, brain tumors, continuous EEG, and carotid endarterectomies. Nurses specialize in utilizing the NIHSS, monitoring and manipulating external ventricular devices, subdural drains, and IRRAS. The unit maintains a 1:2 patient-to-nurse ratio and holds an AACN Beacon of Excellence Silver Designation. CMC is the flagship hospital of Atrium Health, serving as the region’s only Level 1 Trauma center, Magnet-designated, and an approved transplant center for heart, kidney, pancreas, and liver. It is also one of North Carolina’s 5 Academic Medical Center Teaching Hospitals, providing residency training and serving as a regional campus for Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
