Job Overview: The role of the Registered Nurse Manager is to coordinate and lead the nursing team to ensure quality healthcare to eligible veterans and their spouses. Responsible for developing and directing staff, collaborating with the interdisciplinary team, and maintaining standards of care. Directly responsible for ensuring residents needs are met by educating, coaching, and scheduling nursing team members. Helps create and foster a safe and compassionate environment leading to positive resident outcomes.

Requirements

  • Must have excellent working knowledge of the nursing process and its applications.
  • Knowledge of geriatric patient care procedures, terminology, equipment, techniques, practices, and interpersonal relationships.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of nursing process, particularly as it relates to residents, long-term care, and rehabilitation.
  • Requires mental maturity to deal with fast-paced, demanding work environment, and interact with sometimes volatile and angry residents.
  • Requires good assessment skills and ability to make sound judgements based on clinical nursing practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and work well with others
  • Ability to follow oral and written instruction explicitly and be detail oriented.
  • Clinical skill in the use of nursing treatment and diagnostic instruments and equipment (i.e. I.V. pumps, feeding pumps, thermometer, vital signs tower, EKG, BP equipment, glucometer, otoscope, ophthalmoscope, and oxygen equipment, etc.).
  • Ability to react to emergency situations.
  • Ability to use good clinical judgment in assessing resident care needs and delegating tasks.
  • Ability to objectively evaluate employees; to use tact in coaching/counseling sessions; to employ best practice research in training and orienting new employees.
  • Ability to defuse confrontations and resolve conflict.
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing is required.
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Montana is required.
  • Supervisory Experience
  • Two years or more years of job-related experience preferably in long term care.

Responsibilities

  • Directly responsible for hiring RNs, LPNs, and CNAs.
  • Develops the orientation program and mentoring to ensure proper training and foster job satisfaction.
  • Completes pre-appraisal and performance evaluations within the established timeframe to ensure job standards are met, training needs are identified, and employees are informed of their performance.
  • Maintains quality nursing care by coaching, counselling, and disciplining staff via the corrective action process.
  • Schedules nurses to work the floor day to day and monthly.
  • Supervises scheduling for the entire nursing team to ensure staffing patterns and continuity of resident care.
  • Assists in coordinating education and training through professional meetings, in-services, and individual counselling.
  • Maintains quality care standards by coordinating and enforcing facility policies and procedures.
  • Monitor’s timecards daily and approves payroll for nurses and CNAs.
  • Available at all times to assist nurses with questions, concerns, clinical guidance, documentation, nursing tasks, and clinical procedures as needs arise.
  • Makes frequent rounds to assess resident condition by reviewing census sheets, asking questions of the previous shift, reviewing problems, addressing concerns, reviewing the medical record, performing resident assessments, and reports problems and interventions to the Director of Nursing.
  • Review and prioritize the list of residents to see the doctor by establishing acuity levels, meeting Federal regulation requirements, and by using experienced nursing judgement.
  • Assesses residents to evaluate care needs by physical examination, mental examination, data examination, and completing assessment forms.
  • Observe the resident’s condition to ensure resident care is being delivered, the resident is safe, and the resident’s needs are met.
  • Assist physicians to provide medical care to the residents by aiding with physical examinations, answering healthcare questions, transcribing physician orders, and reporting change in resident condition.
  • Carries out physician orders and performs nursing treatments to improve resident condition.
  • Administers medications to meet physician orders.
  • Counsels’ residents concerning diagnostic procedures to keep the resident informed of the procedures and answering questions.
  • Evaluates and educates on proper nursing documentation at all levels and on all facility forms.
  • Evening Shift RN Manager acts as the facility’ wound care coordinator.
  • Night Shift RN Manager acts as the facility medication/pharmacy coordinator.
  • Coordinate’s care of all tube feedings including plan of care, education and training, and documentation.
  • Assists MDS Coordinator as needed, buy completing the monthly MDS calendar and assigning MDS assessments to nursing staff.
  • Oversees Restorative Maintenance Program.
  • Coordinate’s nursing admissions and readmissions, considering clinical needs, transportation, documentation, and continuity of care.
  • Coordinates and posts bi-weekly documentation assignments
  • Identifies and collaborates to resolve clinical and administrative problems.
  • Takes on DON responsibilities in her/his absence.
