The Organ Coordinator Nursing Supervisor assists a Nurse Manager in providing management and oversight of daily Nursing activities to a Hepatology or transplant department. The Nursing Supervisor provides leadership and performs appropriate management functions delegated by the Nurse Manager and Transplant Director including resource allocation, safe working environment, optimal patient care, development of departmental structure, process, and outcome standards, and direct FTE oversight. This position typically reports to a Nurse Manager or Transplant Director and the typical Distribution of Job Duties are 60% Tactical, 30% Operational, 10% Strategic. IHOPP Team Supervisor – Key Responsibilities: Program Leadership & Operations: Provide daily operational leadership for the IHOPP team, ensuring reliable 24/7 coverage for organ recovery, and perfusion support. Develop and maintain workflows that support standardized organ procurement and perfusion practices across Heart, Liver, Kidney, and PCH programs. Monitor case distribution, response times, travel schedules, and call coverage to ensure safe, efficient operations. Partner with transplant service line leadership to align IHOPP operations with strategic growth plans and regulatory standards. Team Management & Workforce Development: Directly supervise and support a team of cross-trained IHOPP technologists, including scheduling, mentoring, performance feedback, and competency maintenance. Lead recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and ongoing professional development for IHOPP staff. Foster a high-performance, team-based culture with emphasis on safety, accountability, communication, and continuous improvement. Maintain call schedules and staffing models that meet volume demands and maintain appropriate staff-to-case ratios. Clinical Quality, Safety & Compliance: Ensure adherence to all UNOS, CMS, OPTN, and Intermountain Health policies related to organ procurement, preservation, transport, and documentation. Lead quality improvement initiatives for preservation times, logistical efficiency, and organ handling processes. Collaborate with surgeons and clinical teams to evaluate and optimize perfusion outcomes, case readiness, and procedural quality Support internal audit processes, policy updates ant training required for regulatory compliance. Equipment, Perfusion Devices & Supply Oversight: Manage the maintenance, calibration, and readiness of all organ perfusion pumps, transport devices, and specialized procurement equipment. Set up and oversee supply management, inventory, and replacement cycles to ensure equipment availability for urgent cases. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Serve as the primary operational liaison between IHOPP, transplant surgeons, anesthesia, OR leadership, Life Flight, clinical coordinators, Donor Connect, and other external partners. Attend multidisciplinary transplant committees, contributing operational expertise to improve organ access and outcomes. Maintain strong relationships with OPOs, donor hospitals, and transport partners to ensure seamless processes and communication. On-Call & Direct Support: Participate in procurement rotation 35-50% of their time. Step in as needed to assist with procurement or perfusion activities during high-volume periods, staff shortages, or complex cases. Scope: This position typically supports a Nurse Manager or Program Director. Coordinates with Nurse Manager and Program Director to ensure competent and sufficient number of staff to meet patient care needs, which includes hiring, orientation, and managing staffing to a changing census. As delegated, ensures that new skill training and ongoing competency verification is completed annually. As delegated, evaluates staff competency through use of performance reviews and peer reviews. Mentors staff and provide professional educational opportunities. Utilizes participative practice management models. Clinical Excellence: Coordinates performance and compliance with patient safety initiatives, federal, state, and other regulatory bodies such as UNOS, Joint Commission, CMS, DOPL ABTC, and other unit specific accrediting and certifying bodies. Assists with the achievement of clinical program goals and may implement action plans to improve performance as delegated. Effectively uses professional and organizational best practices to ensure the delivery of quality patient care. Participating member of a professional nursing organization appropriate to position and service line. Facilitates and encourages staff nurse participation in professional organizations. Patient Engagement: In conjunction with Nurse Manager and Program Director, monitors and improves patient and referral facility/agency satisfaction utilizing available service metrics and national benchmarks to develop and implement action plans to achieve desired outcomes. Acts as a role model for staff and encourages the incorporation of Healing Commitments and Healing Connections in every aspect of patient care delivery. Ensures that staff incorporates evidence-based practice into all aspects of care delivery. Physician Engagement: Partners with physicians at the unit level to achieve clinical, operational, and service goals. Community Stewardship: Communicates to staff and encourages participation in opportunities for community outreach activities (e.g., health fairs, middle and high school education). Supports staff participation in outside community organizations such as volunteer health clinics, health fairs, and advisory boards for not for profit organizations.
