About The Position

This full-time Registered Nurse position in the Outpatient Oncology Infusion clinic at Aurora St. Lukes Medical Center involves providing ongoing, age-specific, and specialty-specific care to patients, utilizing the nursing process. The role includes assessing educational needs, providing patient and family teaching and counseling, and integrating health promotion and preventive care aspects. The nurse will also integrate symptom assessment and management according to treatment plans, assess social determinants of health, and coordinate care with appropriate resources. Key responsibilities include managing patient caseloads, anticipating changes in patient status, determining care priorities, and continuously assessing patient responses to services. The RN will communicate regularly with physicians and other providers to update care plans, coordinate specialty care such as oral chemotherapy plans, and administer medications including chemotherapy, biologic therapies, antibiotics, and other intravenous medications in the infusion center. The role also involves central venous access device management, transfusion of blood products, therapeutic phlebotomy, and providing telephone consultation/triage and care coordination. Maintaining accurate clinical and patient records is essential. The nurse is expected to assist in staff orientation and educational activities, follow policies, and take ownership of professional development by advancing clinical skills and pursuing certifications. Participation in department and site-level shared governance activities, journal clubs, and Grand Rounds is also expected, with a focus on sharing knowledge to elevate care quality.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which the team member practices.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) (needs to be obtained within 6 months).
  • ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy Provide Card/Certificate (within 30 days of hire).
  • Associate's Degree in Nursing.
  • Typically requires 2 years of experience in a clinical setting that includes experiences in specialty.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound judgments.
  • Exceptional organization and communication skills (oral and written).
  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Ability to multi-task with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to work with diverse patient populations.

Nice To Haves

  • ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy Provide Card/Certificate (preferred upon hire).
  • OCN (Oncology Certified Nurse) preferred for oncology departments.
  • CRNI (Certified Registered Nurse Infusion) for non-chemotherapy infusion settings.
  • BSN Preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize the nursing process to provide ongoing care according to age-specific and specialty-specific patient needs.
  • Assess educational needs and provide teaching and counseling to the patient and their family.
  • Integrate health promotion and preventive aspects of care.
  • Integrate symptom assessment and management according to the treatment plan.
  • Assess social determinants of health that could impact care and coordinate care to appropriate resources (e.g., navigation, SW).
  • Assume primary responsibility for caseloads consisting of patients in specialty area.
  • Anticipate and recognize changes in a patient's status and need for care.
  • Determine priorities of patient care based on patient needs and in alignment with the treatment plan.
  • Provide ongoing assessment of patient's response to services and apply interventions as appropriate.
  • Update and revise care plan as needed.
  • Communicate with physicians and other providers to confirm, correlate, and update patient's plan of care.
  • Provide status update to physician/provider on a regular basis.
  • Coordinate care in alignment with specialty care of the patient, e.g., coordination of oral chemotherapy plan in an oncology setting.
  • Administer medications if assigned to infusion center setting, including chemotherapy, biologic therapies, antibiotics, and other intravenous medications.
  • Perform central venous access device management according to policy.
  • Perform transfusion of blood products, therapeutic phlebotomy per guidelines and policies.
  • Provide telephone consultation/triage and care coordination to patient, family, and/or significant others according to protocol and policies.
  • Maintain and update accurate clinical and patient records according to system policies and state, and federal guidelines.
  • Assist in development and implementation of staff orientation and educational activities.
  • Follow published policies and procedures and regularly monitor changes or additions to them.
  • Take ownership of one’s professional development in the specialty.
  • Continually strive to advance knowledge and practice of clinical skills in specialty area including certification as warranted.
  • Attend or coordinate department and/or site level shared governance activities, journal clubs, Grand Rounds.
  • Share acquired knowledge with leaders and team members to continue to elevate quality of care in alignment with current clinical and industry standards.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.
