The Registered Nurse (RN) in this outpatient oncology float role utilizes the nursing process to provide ongoing, age-specific, and specialty-specific care to patients. Key responsibilities include assessing educational needs, providing teaching and counseling to patients and families, integrating health promotion and preventive care, and managing symptoms according to treatment plans. The RN assesses social determinants of health, coordinates care with appropriate resources, and assumes primary responsibility for patient caseloads in the specialty area. This role involves anticipating and recognizing changes in patient status, determining care priorities, and continuously assessing patient responses to services. Communication with physicians and other providers is essential for confirming and updating care plans. The RN coordinates specialty care, such as oral chemotherapy plans, and may administer medications including chemotherapy, biologic therapies, antibiotics, and other intravenous medications in an infusion center setting. Other duties include central venous access device management, transfusion of blood products, therapeutic phlebotomy, and providing telephone consultation/triage. Maintaining accurate clinical and patient records, assisting in staff orientation, and adhering to policies are also part of the role. The RN is expected to take ownership of professional development, advance clinical skills, pursue certification, and participate in shared governance activities to elevate the quality of care. The position requires demonstrating knowledge and skills appropriate to the age of patients served, including understanding growth and development principles and interpreting patient data to meet age-specific needs.
