About The Position

The RN in Pre-Op/PACU provides expert professional nursing care during the pre- and post-operative course. The RN assesses, implements and evaluates the care of the patient. The nurse will assure that the patient is prepared for discharge to a home environment by providing the necessary education to the patient and their responsible caregiver.

Requirements

  • Communicates effectively and has the ability to work compatibly with all physicians and staff of the Eye Center.

  • Possesses strong organizational skills, is efficient and understands the importance of efficiency and cost effectiveness in an ambulatory surgery setting.
  • Knowledge of clinical skills.
  • Ability to make quick assessments of patients and handles emergency situations effectively and quickly.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Maintains a professional demeanor, including dress and work conversation.
  • Flexible in working hours.
  • Demonstrates Age Specific competencies for Adult and Pediatric patients.
  • Graduated from an accredited school of nursing and has a valid Colorado Registered Nurse (RN) license. Must provide proof of license and be in good standing.
  • BLS, ACLS and PALS (completed within 3 months of employment).
  • Two years of pre-operative, recovery room, intensive care or emergency room experience is desired.
  • Ability to stand/walk for long periods of time (up to 12 hours per day) in a fast-paced setting.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, stoop and twist without restriction, pain or discomfort.
  • Ability to assist patients in turning, rising from recliners and stretchers.
  • Ability to assist patients in and out of wheelchairs, push wheelchairs.
  • Ability to assist with moving patients on and off the operating room stretcher.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years of pre-operative, recovery room, intensive care or emergency room experience is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Works with members of the health care team to provide optimal care to the patient, throughout their surgical experience.
  • Must be available to work 3 shifts per month. Flexible Monday – Friday.
  • Must be available to work (1) Summer Holiday Shift – day before or after the Holiday (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) and (1) Winter Shift – day before or after the holiday (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s).
  • Attends all Mandatory Staff Meetings.
  • Maintains a friendly, positive and caring attitude with all patients, physicians and staff.
  • Assists in patient education during all phases of their experience in the ASC.
  • Assists in assuring that the equipment is functioning properly.
  • Monitors the use of all supplies during patient stay. Assist with inventory control and stock accordingly.
  • Documents appropriately the care that is given to the patient.
  • Maintains continuing education to meet state requirements and keep current with health care.
  • Displays professionalism at work and in the community, as a representative of the Eye Center.
  • Identifies actual and potential risks to patients and others, and takes action to minimize or eliminate risk and maximize safety.
  • Assists in Pre-Op/Post-op Phone-calls.
  • Communicates with other health care team members to assure continuity of care in the ASC.
  • Credentialed to receive all patients in PACU including MACs, pediatric and adult generals after surgery. Assesses, evaluates, and documents on the patient. Monitors the patient continuously during their recovery phase. Provides discharge instructions to the patient and their caregiver, verifying confirmation prior to discharge.
  • Incorporates a sense of wellness by allowing the patient’s family to be reunited with them as soon as feasible and encouraging self-care by the patient.
  • Competently uses NextGen.
  • Prepares for emergency situations by knowing the Policies and Procedures of the ASC.
  • Monitors that Universal Precautions are maintained.
  • Completes all necessary documentation on the Nursing Notes record and all patient records.
  • Wipes down gurneys, recliners and medical equipment between patients with a germicidal solution. Remakes beds as needed.
  • Accept other duties as assigned.
