About The Position

The registered nurse (RN) is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. The RN will function within the Mayo Nursing Care Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice provide a basis for the practice of the RN. The RN provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts. The RN delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources. The RN possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching; and may participate on committees or projects. This role is eligible for TN sponsorship. Successful sponsorship will require state licensure and completion of the VisaScreen or equivalent certification. Applicants who are new to Mayo Clinic or our Pre-Op/PACU team must be available to orient Monday-Friday for the first week, and then 3-4 days/week for the following 4-5 weeks. Qualified applicants must live within a reasonable driving distance to campus to meet 45-minute on-call requirement What do Pre-Op/PACU Nurses do at Mayo Clinic? • Focuses on the phases of patient care before and immediately following a surgical procedure, however they do not perform the actual surgery. This includes Pre-Op, Phase 1 PACU and Phase 2 PACU. • Assess, quickly identify and resolve pre-operative issues. • Starting and monitoring IVs, administering pre-operative medications and performing pre-operative instruction and explanation of patient's rights and procedures. • In the PACU (Post Anesthesia Care Unit), the nurse will provide care for post-op patients recovering from general, regional, and local anesthesia. Pre-Op/PACU Department Snapshot • 72 Pre-Op/PACU Beds • 95 Nurses • 11 Patient Care Techs and 8 Clinical Assistants • Pre-Op ratio-1 RN : 3 patients • Phase 1 PACU ratio-1 RN : 2 patients • Phase 2 PACU ratio-1 RN : 3 patients • Fast-paced unit utilizing critical care nursing concepts

Requirements

  • State licensure
  • Completion of the VisaScreen or equivalent certification.
