About The Position

POSITION SUMMARY Responsible to Manager for overall nursing practice. Nursing care of the neonate is directed toward supporting transition to extra uterine life and facilitating integration into the family unity through use of the nursing process. This includes the responsibility for assessment of the neonate's needs, development of the plan of care to meet those needs, implementation of nursing interventions, and evaluation of nursing care based on outcomes of the neonate and family unit. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education: Completion of an accredited registered nurse program required; BSN preferred Experience: Previous RN experience preferred. Charge qualified preferred. Experience in antepartal, neonatal, obstetrical and/or pediatric nursing preferred. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Effectively functions as a team member and as a liaison between patient and staff. Supports and encourages harmonious communication skills. Job requires strong verbal, non-verbal, and written communication skills. Communicates in highly professional manner at all times. Demonstrates a high level of mental and emotional tolerance and even temperament when dealing with ill people; uses tact, sensitivity, sound judgment and a professional attitude when relating with patients, families, and co-workers at all times. License/Certification/Registration: Current Pennsylvania RN licensure. Meets the American Heart Association’s standards for Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) and renews BLS every two years. Within one year of the hire/transfer date meets the American Heart Association’s standards for Healthcare Provider Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and renews PALS every two years. Within one year from the hire/transfer date, completes the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and renews NRP every two years. Relevant certification preferred upon hire. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Receives minimal supervision from the Manager. SUPERVISION GIVEN The Registered Nurse will only have supervision of others while serving as Charge Nurse. Responsibilities ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Performs initial assessment and stabilization of the neonate including but not limited to the following: Establishment and maintenance of an airway and respirations. Provision of a neutral thermal environment. Apgar scoring. Physical assessment. Maturational assessment. Protection from nosocomial infection. Identification procedures. Performance of eye prophylaxis and cord care in accordance with Mount Nittany Medical Center policy and procedures and stat requirements. Assessment of behavioral and developmental patterns of the family unit. Facilitation of family contact. Develops and implements a plan of care based on ongoing assessments. The plan of care: Is updated to meet the neonate's and family's needs based on evaluation and reassessment. Includes discharge planning, pediatric follow-up and other appropriate referrals as needed. Manages neonatal complications and emergencies per Mount Nittany Medical Center policies and procedures and AWHONN standards of neonatal care. Neonatal care focuses on the promotion of maximum health potential for the neonatal and family. Nursing intervention address alterations in the physiological functions and family processes. Coordinates health education of the mother-neonate-family unit. Education is based on the family's knowledge, developmental level, comprehension of skills, resources, and cultural needs. Education is documented in the medical record and includes the family's response to and understanding of the information provided. Education begins upon admission, continues until discharge and includes discharge planning to meet educational needs. Accepts responsibility and accountability for maintaining knowledge, skills and competency in neonatal nursing practice: Maintains as awareness of professional issues. Updates knowledge and clinical skills on an ongoing basis. Remains current on concepts, trends, scientific advances, biomedical equipment and ethics related to neonatal nursing. Evaluates own ability to meet patients and families’ needs NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Performs related and miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Requirements
