The Registered Nurse - Deputy Associate Chief Nurse (ACN) for Extended Care demonstrates leadership, experience, and creative approaches to improvement in quality of care outcomes. The Deputy ACN demonstrates performance and leadership that is broad enough to improve the care for a group of patients. The Registered Nurse - Deputy Associate Chief Nurse (ACN) for Extended Care is responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating patient specific and population-based programs of care, generating and evaluating evidence for practice thus advancing nursing practice and improving outcomes through innovative evidence-based interventions and best practice guidelines. The Deputy ACN assists with identifying the need for new standards, policies and procedures within the organization and across systems, demonstrating professional leadership by taking an active role in the formulation and implementation of such policies at the community, state, and national levels. Interprets the dimensions of nursing care requiring resources at the system level and provides leadership to assure that the system adequately supports the delivery of nursing care. Leads multidisciplinary groups in designing and implementing innovative solutions that address system problems and patient care issues, serves as a leader, consultant, mentor, and change agent to achieve quality, cost effective outcomes. The Deputy ACN develops criteria for and evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice and organizational systems. Plans and implements educational opportunities for health professional staff, patients, and communities. The Deputy ACN works in concert with leaders and others to sustain a culture of safety, modeling High Reliability Organization (HRO) practices. The Deputy ACN performs duties directly contributing to high quality and safe patient care within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). Duties require the ability to apply specialized principles and practices to ensure a systems approach to healthcare delivery. The Deputy ACN directly supports facility leadership in areas of planning, organization, development, direction, and evaluation within the facility. Supports colleagues and other nurses through knowledge sharing to provide safe, quality nursing care. Fosters a safe and supportive environment conducive to the professional development of health care professionals. Evaluates outcomes of evidence-based decisions and practice changes for individuals, groups, and populations. The Deputy ACN oversees the programs and supervises the staff within the restorative program, wound care program, and resident assessment program.
