Outpatient Responsibilities: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: General Functions Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/ Entity as well as the proper release of information. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding attendance and dress code. Utilizes evidence based nutrition practice guidelines in the care of patients. Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated. Actively pursues continuing education and personal development programs to maintain knowledge base and registration. Research/review patient medical record prior to scheduled visit to be prepared for education to be provided as well as needed handouts. Scheduled outpatient visits in light of patient needs and covered benefit. Provide patients with absentee documentation for work or school as needed. Able to travel across multiple campus sites Clerical Functions: Address phone calls/messages print daily list of patients for registration, documenting DOB and DX code for registration purposes, including self- pay information and required amounts as needed make sure supplies are adequate (school/work notes if using paper, commonly used education material) Financial Functions: Proper and accurate inputting of information required in registration, scheduling, documentation and billing systems across the network Reconciliation of charges Maintain current knowledge of CMS OP MNT regulations Attendance at Monthly Insights financial review Human Resources Management: Demonstrates collaborative working relationship with others. Ability to work collaboratively within nutritional services and supporting departments.. Identify and participate in OP MNT appropriate CEU activities Client/Customer Relations: Provides patients, visitor, and co-workers with outstanding customer service. Demonstrates/models the Network’s Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers (internal and external). The Outpatient Dietitian provides individual and group diet counseling and nutrition care services to outpatients/clients/families whose disorders/diseases require complex dietary management or who have been identified to require lifestyle and nutrition management to promote better health. Records results of nutritional assessments and diet counseling in the medical record, as well as progress on follow-up visits in the EMR and/or appropriate paper documentation. May serve on multidisciplinary treatment team(s) composed of physicians, nurses, social workers, and other allied health team members. Professional education: provides and participates in educational programs such as medical conferences, seminars, and workshops. Able to assess clients learning style and ability Use of interpreter or language line or family assistance when patient is unable to receive or retain information due to illness or language barrier Plan scheduling templates in coordination with central scheduling to best meet the needs of the population served. Quality Assessment and Improvement: Demonstrates Performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/Process, and Safety Counsels outpatients and their families on nutrition. Tracks quality assurance / performance improvement indicators as appropriate/requested Documentation utilized the nutrition care process. Utilizes evidence based nutrition practice guidelines in the care of patients Demonstrates expertise in teaching/learning process and use of PI to improve client outcomes using evidenced based knowledge and systems. Maintains accurate records/documentation of patient care. Conducts and successfully passes MNT self audit annually and external audit completed annually. (achieve 90% or greater) Leadership and Managerial Skills: Represents department and health network professionally and ethically at all times. Demonstrates excellent communication and listening skills to interact with a wide variety of individuals and groups. Achieves assigned departmental goals. Maintains effective communication with key departmental and physician personnel. Available by phone or email for patient questions Possess the ability to creatively problem solve, work independently with minimal supervision, and make decisions while working within a self-directed and team-oriented work environment. Have strong time management and organizational skills. Possess adaptive counseling skills to meet needs of diverse client base Attendance at appropriate meetings /meetings assigned Other (As Determined With Immediate Supervisor) Responsible for providing comprehensive, high quality nutritional care to patients in the hospital, clinics, and related entities. This includes, but is not limited to: assessments, care planning, monitoring, and diet counseling/ instructions for patients/families. RD will make appropriate recommendations to physicians. Assessments will be documented in the electronic medical record or on the network paper nutrition assessment form. Other duties may include outpatient counseling, research, teaching, or community service. Implements/conducts professional and business practices in order to uphold St. Luke’s University Health Network mission and values. JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Refer to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics: Standards of Practice (SOP) and Standards of Professional Performance (SOPP) for Registered Dietitian Nutritionists to evaluate individual skills and competencies for providing care to individuals. Demonstrates competence in the assessment, range of treatment, appropriate to the population served. Acquires additional on-the-job skills and engages in tailored continuing education to further enhance knowledge and skills obtained with formal education. Obtains technical training and professional interaction for advancement and expanding breadth of competence. Independently works to prioritize and provide routine medical nutrition therapy according to theoretical concepts and established evidence-based standards of care. Through the nutrition screening process, proceed with the appropriate nutrition diagnosis and intervention to provide optimal patient outcomes. Coordinates all phases of nutrition care including nutrition assessment, care planning, monitoring, education and counseling of hospitalized patients in a variety of settings. Performs duties in support of and in compliance with customer satisfaction initiatives, performance improvement plans, The Joint Commission, and other licensing, accrediting, and regulatory agencies. Provides care to patients implementing medical nutrition therapy for basic and complex patients in assigned areas. Precepts dietetic interns and actively participates in department area projects. May suggest projects and outcome studies and participate in the data collection. Participates as a member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team such as in rounds, individual consultation and formal/informal teaching. Participates in community activities. Actively seeks solutions to problems/systems/issues. Requirements

  • Active dietetic registration through Successful completion of a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) or Coordinated Program in Dietetics (CPD) plus Dietetic Internship (DI) accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) and Licensed as appropriate per state requirements.
  • Masters degree as required by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (effective Jan. 1, 2024) or bachelors degree grandfathered prior to this update.
  • Active dietetic registration, and for Pennsylvania: PA state license maintained through PA state nursing board.
