About The Position

The Regional Medical Director (RMD) serves as the senior clinical leader and medical voice for a defined region, providing oversight of hospitals and veterinarians while advancing AmeriVet’s strategic vision. This role drives excellence in medical quality, doctor engagement, and hospital performance across multiple sites in their assigned region. The number of sites will range between 70-100. This position can be based in any state in the Mid-Atlantic or Southeast and will require travel up to 60% of the time to assigned practices. The RMD provides comprehensive multi-site medical leadership by championing exceptional patient care, elevating the client experience, and ensuring consistency in clinical standards. In close partnership with operations, the RMD also supports operational efficiency, fosters high-performing and collaborative team cultures, and contributes to the achievement of regional financial goals. Operating at both strategic and executional levels, the RMD partners cross-functionally with Operations, People & Culture, Growth, Finance, IT and executive leadership to translate strategy into action—ensuring high-quality care delivery, strong team engagement, and sustainable business growth across the region. Reporting: The Regional Medical Director (RMD) reports directly to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and maintains a strong dotted-line partnership with the Regional Vice President of Operations (RVP). The RMD collaborates closely with field leadership and support center partners to drive excellence in medical quality, patient care, client experience, team culture, and overall hospital performance.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or its equivalent degree required.
  • Active licensure without restrictions in at least one state of practice (multi-state preferred).
  • Active DEA Registration as necessary for responsible practice location(s).
  • Any required state controlled substance, pharmacy or other licenses and/or registrations as required.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience as a practicing Veterinarian.
  • Minimum 3 year of experience leading a veterinary team, including multi-unit management experience (10+ sites)
  • Exceptional verbal, written, and nonverbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex medical information through multiple methods and settings.
  • Strong time-management, prioritization, and delegation capabilities, enabling efficient and effective hospital operations.
  • Demonstrates sound clinical judgment and consistently makes thoughtful, well-informed decisions.
  • Serves as a visible clinical field leader and key driver of practice performance, quality of care, and continuous improvement.
  • Maintains the highest standards of professionalism, respect, and courtesy in all interactions.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills that inspire trust, engagement, and collaboration across the hospital team.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Medical Leadership: Translate AmeriVet’s enterprise strategy into regional medical execution plans, establishing and aligning clinical priorities, protocols, and standards of care across the region. Drive the adoption of best practices, clinical innovation, and evidence-based medicine while fostering continuous improvement and developing scalable medical frameworks to support growth and the successful integration of new hospitals.
  • Medical Quality & Clinical Excellence: Ensure consistent delivery of high-quality, compliant veterinary care across all hospitals. Establish and monitor clinical KPIs and outcome-based measurement systems, including diagnostic utilization, preventive care compliance, and dental and procedural standards. Support the development and implementation of medical protocols that reflect community-appropriate care and the unique needs of individual hospitals, while continuously monitoring and improving patient outcomes, safety, and adherence to standards of care.
  • Regional Performance & Operational Integration: Partner with Operations leadership to drive hospital performance across key metrics, including visit growth and case volume, ACT/Medical Quality, and client satisfaction and retention. Promote consistency in workflows and reduce unnecessary variability across hospitals, while leading root-cause analysis and implementing corrective action plans for underperforming locations.
  • Doctor Leadership, Engagement & Development: Lead, coach, and develop Medical Directors and associate veterinarians while fostering a high-performance, accountability-driven medical culture. Partner with People & Culture to recruit, onboard, and retain top veterinary talent, reduce vacancy and turnover, and strengthen succession planning pipelines across the region.
  • Culture, Collaboration & Change Leadership: Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and highly engaged culture across hospitals, promoting strong alignment between medical and operational teams and ensuring alignment with company-wide initiatives. Lead effectively through change, including clinical transformation initiatives, process improvements, and growth and integration efforts. Serve as a trusted advisor and influential leader across the region, guiding teams through evolving priorities while maintaining focus on performance, culture, and quality.
  • Financial & Business Leadership: Drive the financial performance of medical operations while maintaining the highest standards of patient care. Partner cross-functionally on budget development and forecasting, revenue growth strategies, and cost management, including formulary alignment. Monitor key financial and operational metrics such as EBITDAC and labor efficiency to inform decision-making and performance improvement. Ensure appropriate medical charging, regulatory compliance, and accurate documentation practices across all hospitals.
  • Client Experience & Community Impact: Ensure the consistent delivery of a high-quality client experience across all hospitals by upholding strong communication standards and a culture of service excellence. Provide oversight and support in resolving escalated client concerns, while promoting community engagement, strategic partnerships, and initiatives that enhance access to care and drive practice growth.
  • Compliance, Risk & Governance: Ensure adherence to all federal, state, and local veterinary regulations across the region. Maintain oversight of medical record quality and accuracy, controlled substances and pharmaceutical protocols, and overall safety and regulatory compliance. Partner closely with Legal and Compliance teams to proactively mitigate risk, address potential issues, and uphold the highest standards of ethics and professional integrity. Step in as the responsible veterinarian on a temporary basis when necessary to ensure continuity of compliant medical operations. Perform other duties as assigned in support of organizational goals.
