About The Position

The purpose of this classification is to drive or operate sanitation trucks and manually collect refuse along a prescribed route. This is a special classification to provide incentives for those drivers who split their time between driving the vehicle and functioning as a Refuse Collector. This classification is safety sensitive, subject to random drug testing in accordance with the County’s Drug & Alcohol Policy.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED, preferred
• Two years of experience driving and operating heavy trucks
• Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Commercial Driver’s License.
• Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a valid 12-month DOT Medical Blue Card as a condition of employment for some departments.

Responsibilities

• Drives semi-automated and fully automated sanitation trucks to collect solid waste along an assigned route; positions vehicle to allow for the most efficient and effective loading or dumping of materials; monitors and adjusts pace of vehicle and collection activities to ensure timely completion of route; operates mechanisms on truck to secure and collect waste; ensures that load is properly balanced, covered, and contained; and monitors activities of workers on the back of truck for safety.
• Collects refuse along assigned route; retrieves trash bin, containers, or bags from along route; empties trash bins and containers into truck; operates container arm, lift, and compactor mechanisms as needed; and returns bins and containers to their proper place.
• Inspects and prepares equipment for safe and proper operation prior to beginning work for the day; performs light maintenance on equipment, which includes changing oil, refueling, and refilling lubricants; cleans vehicles, beds, and mounted equipment upon completion of assignments; and secures vehicle after use.
• Provides coverage during special events/activities as needed; responds to emergency/disaster situations; provides assistance to other employees or departments; and performs other related duties as required.
