About The Position

Health Ministries Clinic (HMC) is seeking a detail-oriented and dependable Referral Clerk to join our integrated care team in Newton, Kansas. This is a full-time position offering the opportunity to support patient care in a collaborative, mission-driven environment. As a key member of our administrative team at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), the Referral Clerk plays an important role in coordinating patient referrals to specialists and outside services. In this role, you'll work closely with providers, patients, and specialty offices to ensure referrals are processed accurately and patients receive the follow-up care they need.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines

Nice To Haves

  • Previous customer service experience preferred
  • Experience in a clinical or healthcare office setting (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Receive, process, and manage referral requests for diagnostic testing, medical specialists, and outside providers
  • Schedule consultation appointments with specialty providers
  • Track referrals and follow up on those that are unscheduled, rejected, or require additional documentation
  • Contact insurance carriers to verify benefits and obtain pre-authorizations when required
  • Coordinate with clinical staff to ensure required documentation and orders are complete
  • Contact patients to inform them of referral details and scheduled specialist appointments
  • Communicate with specialty offices to coordinate patient care and scheduling
  • Follow up with nursing staff to confirm appointments, procedures, and authorizations
  • Maintain accurate referral documentation within the electronic health record (EHR)
  • Process and forward requests for patient medical history when required
  • Track imaging orders and follow up to confirm completion of procedures
