About The Position

Under the supervision of the Sports Director, the Referee is responsible for officiating youth basketball games.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Maintain current CPR certification and First Aid throughout employment.
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must possess and utilize excellent communication, customer service and organizational skills. Demonstrate prior ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Must have good human relations’ and communication skills to facilitate positive relationships with staff, volunteers, parents, members and program participants.
  • Must be committed to the Merrimack Valley YMCA’s mission, character development and goals.
  • Able to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Able to stand/move while working part- or full-time hours.
  • Must have the capability to promote the social, emotional, intellectual and physical talents of each child.
  • Use behavior management techniques that are developmentally appropriate.
  • Maintain a professional manner at all times with children, parents and colleagues.
  • Must follow/practice all program policies and procedures during center’s operational hours.
  • Remain flexible for job specific and general YMCA trainings and mandatory staff meetings.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce the rules and regulations of assigned games.
  • Conducts energizing, fun, safe, and educational sessions; provide positive feedback, constructive coaching, and encouragement to all participants.
  • Ensure safety is a priority at all times.
  • Able to commit to a set session schedule and attend as needed.
  • Assist Director in maintaining an orderly and fun atmosphere for assigned games.
  • Wear a staff shirt when working assigned games.
  • Act professionally and to serve as role models for the participants.
  • Uphold the YMCA four core values of caring, honest, respect and responsibility.
  • Work with YMCA staff and treat them with respect. Perform other tasks and /or duties deemed necessary by the Sports Director. Monitor and communicate with supervisor all staff related issues and concerns. Attend all staff meetings and maintain and update when required proper certifications.
  • Provide welcoming member service. Interact with members in a friendly, engaging and professional manor. Respond to inquiries and solves problems. Creates a supportive community environment, assists in recruiting and engaging new families, and connects families to the YMCA’s cause. Educate members of all policies and procedures of the YMCA. Be familiar with all information and answer questions about programs, schedules, and policies of the Sport & Recreation department. Ensure that the MVYMCA Child Protection Policies are fulfilled.
  • Assist in providing an area that is clean, safe and well maintained. Ensure that all equipment is in good working order and communicate to management any deficiencies in quantity and or quality of all equipment.
  • Support volunteers and their daily functions.
  • Assists in YMCA activities/events and engages in collaborative relationships in order to strengthen, support, and build community.
