About The Position

The Recycling and Solid Waste Supervisor leads the university recycling efforts by inspiring students, university staff, and administration to actively participate in recycling and sustainability efforts based on gospel principles, educating the campus community, and providing daily opportunities for environmental stewardship. He/she is responsible for equipment acquisition, basic equipment maintenance and cleaning, and arranging for equipment repair.

Requirements

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU
  • B.S. degree in Environmental Science or related field OR 4 years of field experience
  • Ability to advocate for recycling and waste reduction
  • Effective supervisory and training skills
  • Ability to work proactively with all BYU employees and departments and with service to the MTC and temple
  • Ability to respect and adhere to safety guidelines
  • Effective record keeping skills
  • Professional attitude, dress, and adherence to the University's Honor Code
  • Physical Exam and Lift Test Required
  • Physical Effort: Moderate – Physical effort represented by frequent handling of medium weight objects (approx. 20-50 lbs.) and materials, or use of medium weight hand tools. May require climbing and working from ladders or in awkward positions.
  • Environment: Frequent exposure to unfavorable conditions such as all-weather, or working in cramped, very dirty, or unpleasant quarters
  • Hazards: Frequent existing or potential hazards
  • Participate in snow removal as needed. Appropriate cold-weather gear is recommended, including a hat, gloves, boots, layered clothing, and sunscreen
  • Operate equipment such as compactor and bottle sorter as required. Eye and hearing protection, closed-toe shoes, and gloves are recommended
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals. Eye protection, closed-toe shoes, and gloves are required

Nice To Haves

  • 5 years in the management of recycling and/or waste stream program

Responsibilities

  • Train and supervise student employees and staff in all aspects of recycling operations and procedures
  • Recycling Promotion and Education
  • Promote recycling, sustainability and proper waste disposal procedures across campus as part of developing a campus stewardship culture centered on gospel principles
  • Meet with departments to determine recycling needs/concerns
  • Assist the Sustainability Office in promoting stewardship programs and activities
  • Monitor contamination and implement programs to decrease contamination rates
  • Recycling and Solid Waste Collection
  • Organize pickup and disposal schedules for recycling and solid waste collection
  • Provide and maintain recycling and waste containers across campus and Receive requests and arrange for confidential shredding
  • Ensure proper maintenance of garbage trucks, hook trucks, compacting rolloffs and open top rolloffs
  • Evaluate recycling and solid waste collection trucks and containers and replace as needed (dumpsters, rolloffs, compacting rolloffs)
  • Recycling Center Operations
  • Supervise, monitor, arrange for, or perform equipment maintenance, repair, and cleaning on the baler, conveyor, shredder and forklift
  • Ensure recycling quality standards are met in baling materials
  • Ensure equipment is operated in a safe manner
  • Arrange for and ensure effective shipping of truckload quantities of recyclables
  • Ensure recycling shop cleanliness
