About The Position

This position plans, organizes, supervises, and promotes various sports and leisure programs and activities for the community.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of City and department policies and procedures, relevant state laws, and city ordinances
  • Knowledge of the principals and practices of special event programming
  • Knowledge of the standards and practices of municipal sports and recreation programs
  • Knowledge of the rules and equipment of various sports and activities
  • Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures

  • Bachelor's Degree (Master's preferred) or knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study in Parks and Recreation, Marketing/Advertising, Public Relations or related to the occupational field
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with 1-3 years' experience or service in a supervisory role
  • Experience of at least 1 year of experience in the areas of athletics and recreational programming is required. Experience 3-5 years preferred in the areas of Athletic and Recreation coordination, with emphasis on league and program management
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Driver's License issued by the State of Tennessee for the type of vehicle or equipment operated
  • Proficient with computer skills including but not limited to: Microsoft Office, Adobe, Canva, Photoshop (or related program), Facebook and Instagram

  • CPRP (Certified Park and Recreation Professional) is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Plans, coordinates, organizes, conducts and supervises various sports programs including but not limited to adult softball, adult kickball, adult basketball, adult volleyball, youth basketball, pickleball and youth baseball
  • Schedules, plans and promotes activities, programs and leagues for the community and residents
  • Oversees registration for activities and programs, develop team rosters, and maintain league rules
  • Inputs all leagues schedules into the master schedule and communicates with the Assistant Directors on scheduling needs
  • Manages and oversees the department wide coaching requirement database: including all annual background screenings, seasonal coaching training, and CPR training
  • Manages time sheet entries of all assigned part-time staff. Reviews and approves hours for payroll
  • Serves as the point of contact and liaison for all new recreational program applications and approved POFA's. Manages all required processes including insurance, documentation, rosters, and user fees
  • Oversee the interviewing, hiring, training, and scheduling of programs supervisors for assigned leagues and programs
  • Supervises and trains volunteer coaches for various sports programs
  • Manages the scheduling of all activities and facility users for re-occurring groups and activities including but not limited to cross-country course activity, disc golf leagues and events, grass volleyball activities, and senior citizen programs
  • Serves as the point of contact and manages scheduling all camp programs within the parks' facilities
  • Oversee the scheduling of programs and activities of the pickleball facility
  • Maintains inventory of game day equipment and supplies in all basketball gyms and oversees purchasing equipment and supplies for programs as needed
  • Maintains online services for the department including website, website design and online registration for areas of responsibility
  • Manages contract agreements as applicable and ensures all agreements are in compliance with city policy for athletic programs including but not limited to sponsorships, uniforms, and equipment contracts
  • Provides general supervision of and inspects parks facilities for safety compliance. Assist in the evaluation of field conditions and make decisions as to the playability of the fields
  • Handles issues of concern with parents, participants, staff, or volunteers. Addresses conflict resolution and prepares letters, emails and other communications about any disciplinary actions or suspensions from the league
  • Prepares, presents, and implements new programs and community engaging events
  • Implements, manages, and creates marketing and social media initiatives including use of Facebook, Instagram, Google Drive, Canva, and other software management applications
  • Purchases equipment and supplies for programs; maintains inventory
  • Prepares budget requests for programs and activities; ensures compliance with budget
  • Works closely with Assistant Directors and Special Events Program Supervisor on overseeing the master parks schedules for events, programs, and athletics
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
