About The Position

Performs responsible work overseeing daily operations our Neighborhood summer camp programs or other recreation classes, camps, activities or events for families and individuals of a variety of ages and abilities in our underserved communities; oversees staff and conducts daily program planning and scheduling, activity leadership, site record keeping and staff management for preschool, elementary, and/or teen programs.

Requirements

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to 48 semester hours of college credit coursework; childcare certificate or credential from State-licensed approved program also acceptable; some experience in staff management, instructional procedures and practices, and working with children of different ages and abilities, preferably in a recreational, state-licensed, or educational setting; some supervisory experience preferred.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must possess knowledge and have experience working with children from underserved communities.
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain within 30 days of hire, a valid Virginia driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record based on James City County’s criteria.
  • Must possess or be able to successfully complete or obtain within 60 days of hire: certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid and Medicine Administration; training in passenger van safety and County sponsored OSHA training.
  • Knowledge of stages of growth and development, safety and health practices of different age groups and abilities, different types of demographics and associated needs and planning different recreational activities.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service including setting and meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction; and leadership techniques, principles and procedures to assign work, schedule and train assigned staff.
  • Skill in use of computer software, especially Microsoft Office Suite; and arts and crafts, sports and games.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team setting and with children, families, staff and community partners and contacts; solve complex problems and work efficiently and effectively under pressure such as deadlines or emergencies; work under minimal supervision.

  • Must maintain a Virginia driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Must obtain a minimum of 24 hours of staff training and development through in-service training, individual study, classroom training, seminars, or conferences annually.
  • Must obtain and maintain all required certifications and tests including: o Tuberculosis (TB) test every 2 years o State criminal record check every three (3) years o Child protective services check including Sworn Disclosure statement every three 3 years o American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification every 2 years o American Red Cross First Aid and Medicine Administration Training certification every 3 years o County OSHA training annually

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in recreation, education or childcare related field preferred; some supervisory experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides effective supervision of assigned staff including selection, training, prioritizing and assigning work and related activities.
  • Organizes, leads, teaches and oversees a variety of recreational activities such as arts and crafts, sports, outdoor games, educational program components, etc. for varying age groups and skill levels; supervises participants on field trips; plans daily activity and snack schedule; coordinates family involvement and other site special events.
  • Establishes and maintains rapport with participants, parents, school staff, administrative officials and other community partners; works with parents and school staff to address behavioral needs and special accommodations; provides information to the public; implements program surveys and collects patron feedback; responds to customer inquiries and/or complaints; may be asked to represent the Division on interagency councils, committees, community agencies and groups.
  • Ensures a safe environment and proper use, inventory and upkeep of site facilities, vehicles, supplies and equipment; develops and enforces site rules; opens, closes and secures facility daily.
  • Maintains program within budget limitations; keeps accurate records/statistics and completes necessary site paperwork; reports all accidents, incidents, and disciplinary actions to supervisor.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
