About The Position

This is entry-level work in the area of recreation services in the Department of Parks and Recreation at Anita C. Leight Estuary Center. An incumbent in this classification assists and reports to the Recreation Specialist IV and will be responsible for developing and implementing programs designed to increase the public's environmental awareness of the ecological and scientific aspects of the park. They may also be asked to organize and promote programs throughout the County. An employee in this classification performs administrative, research, and other support work for a department, agency, or office. Actual duties vary with assignment but are diverse in nature. The employee receives general supervision. The ideal incumbent must have flexible hours throughout the week including weekends. The working hours for this position will be Tuesday - Saturday, 8:30 AM-5:00 PM.

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of experience (paid or voluntary) in one or more of the following areas, one (1) year must be working in Environmental Education- working with the public in a recreational environment (such as a sports coach, recreation council, or related capacity) working with the public in the planning and/or oversight of events (such as weddings, receptions, or related capacity) working with the public in a progressively responsible administrative support function (such as correspondence, answering inquiries, compiling and entry of data into a computer system, or related capacity).
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Within 6 months of hire; Automated External Defibrillator (AED) (Required); Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) (Required); First-Aid Certification (Required)
  • Possession of a valid Class "C" non-commercial driver's license with no more than three (3) points.

  • Some knowledge of the principles of natural science and procedures to develop and deliver successful nature interpretive programming
  • Working knowledge of developing and conducting recreation programs
  • Knowledge of recreation and administrative principles and practices
  • Ability to develop procedures and forms
  • Knowledge of, or the ability to learn terms, procedures, and operations relating to area of work
  • Ability to deal effectively with the public and with other employees and departments
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office; to learn new software programs as needed; maintain record systems; to prepare analytical reports and to compile data
  • Ability to communicate effectively; both orally and in writing
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, stand, or sit for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to drive a County vehicle while carrying out some assignments, if applicable
  • Must comply with all Federal (OSHA), State of Maryland (MOSH), safety regulations and applicable Harford County safety policies, procedures, or manual as required for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, develops, and conducts environmental educational programs, including summer camps, outreach, field trips, and public programs on topics such as natural history, the Piedmont plateau, etc.
  • Supervises and handles the maintenance and care of live fish, reptiles, and amphibian enclosures
  • Receives and answers inquiries from employees and the public in the office and on the phone
  • Leads canoe and kayak trips for the public and school groups
  • Designs and constructs nature displays and exhibits.
  • Conducts and carries out research and monitoring projects
  • Prepares nature information brochures
  • Advises the public and others of established interpretations of department and County laws and regulations
  • Gathers and compiles statistical data and prepares reports of findings
  • Maintains inventory and recommends purchase of supplies
  • Assist with the daily operation of a community’s Recreation Council programs and facilities
  • May be asked to recruit and train volunteers
  • Hosts the nature center for visitors
  • Uses a computer, copy machine, and other office equipment
  • Other duties as assigned
