About The Position

This is entry-level recreation work. Bargaining unit position. Nature Of Work Employees in this class are responsible for performing activities of average difficulty at an assigned recreation center, community center, playground, or preschool. Work requires performing tasks that include teaching, instructing and participating in games and recreational activities for all age groups and backgrounds. Although employees work under general supervision, the exercise of some initiative and independent judgement is required. The majority of positions in this class are part-time and may require work during evening hours or weekends. Work is reviewed through observation, conferences, and results obtained.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of: techniques relating to a wide variety of recreation activities; basic records keeping; instructional techniques.
  • Skill in: administering first aid and CPR; care and maintenance of recreational equipment.
  • Ability to: provide leadership in coordinating and conducting recreational activities; provide instruction to participants engaged in group games and sports; maintain records and compile reports; establish and maintain relationships with other employees, civic groups, and the general public; perform activities requiring light to moderate physical exertion; operate a light motor vehicle if required.
  • Graduation from an accredited high school, preferably with six (6) months of experience in organized recreational programs in an instructional capacity; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Possession of Standard First Aid and CPR Certificates within six (6) months of appointment

Responsibilities

  • Plans, promotes, and conducts recreational activities; teaches and oversees games, social activities, and special events; schedules center and playground activities; supervises participants; oversees and teaches persons of all ages; may be required to transport participants in department vehicle.
  • Assists with children's workshops, pre-school programs and projects, math and reading programs; attends recreational events/programs in order to assist participants.
  • Takes orders and purchases supplies for recreational activities, checks in and puts supplies away; receives monies from class participants; writes receipts for supplies and equipment; traces delinquent fees to recover money; maintains records, logs, lists, and forms; performs clerical work such as typing and filing; verifies purchase orders and requisitions and maintains records of transactions; prepares and submits periodic reports.
  • Attends and participates in meetings, workshops, and seminars; coordinates special programs, events, and travel arrangements.
  • Operates audiovisual equipment for recreational shows and productions.
  • Inspects recreational facilities, apparatus, and equipment to ensure safety; performs field maintenance when necessary; enforces proper safety practices and occupational safety rules and regulations to prevent hazardous conditions and protect employees and the public from harm; oversees operation of assigned area in absence of higher-level workers; ensures security of building when leaving area.
  • Directs visitors to ensure that they arrive at the appropriate department or recreational center; answers phones and provide information concerning programs and use of recreation centers.
  • Performs related work as required.
