About The Position

The Recreation and Community Services department is seeking enthusiastic and dependable individuals with strong leadership and interpersonal skills to assist with youth, teen, and senior programs at the Newhall (NCC) and Canyon Country Community Centers (CCCC). Programs include after-school activities for youth ages 5-12, teen programs that offer social, educational, and creative experiences, and senior programs for adults 55+ that focus on wellness and recreation. This position must be available to work up to 19 hours per week, Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m.-6:30 p.m., year-round, with occasional evening or weekend events. The NCC and CCCC provide youth and adults in Santa Clarita with a variety of recreational and educational opportunities in a safe and fun environment. Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • At least six months of volunteer or work experience in an after-school, camps, recreation, education, or other related setting
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain CPR/AED/First Aid Certificate within six months
  • Ability to assist children ages 5 to 17 with daily homework assignments
  • Ability to engage and support seniors (55+) in wellness, recreational, and social programs
  • Ability to follow and enforce City policies as they relate to the health, behavior, and safety of others
  • Ability to organize and prioritize a variety of tasks in an effective and timely manner
  • Positive, team-oriented, self-motivated, and enthusiastic
  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to handle issues and concerns with program participants and parents.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and orally
  • Positive attitude in working with youth and seniors
  • Strong team player and the ability to work both independently and as part of a work group
  • Ability to make sound decisions within the established guidelines and be a creative problem-solver
  • Ability to work up to 19 hours a week; Monday-Friday 2:00-6:00 p.m. year-round, with some flexibility
  • Ability to lift, drag, and push files and equipment weighing 25 pounds or more

  • Bilingual in English/Spanish is highly desirable
  • Common Core State Standards knowledge and experience are highly desirable

Responsibilities

  • Works with other staff effectively to implement quality programs, such as sports and arts, and crafts
  • Assists children in the classroom with homework
  • Leads engaging activities for youth, teens, and seniors (55+), including arts and crafts, games, sports, and social or wellness programs.
  • Prepares materials and activities for classes and programs
  • Attends, participates, and supervises youth on fieldtrips
  • Completes various forms, logs, and reports associated with the program
  • Ensures safety of the site in accordance with emergency procedures and reports incidents/accidents; follows and enforces City policies
  • Assists in the organization, set-up, and clean-up of facilities, program areas, and special events
  • Effectively addresses issues and concerns with youth, teens, and program participants as they arise
  • Maintains a professional attitude and provides excellent customer service to participants, City staff, and members of the public
  • Attends meetings and training sessions as needed
  • Performs other duties as directed by the Recreation and Community Services Coordinator or Supervisor
