About The Position

Southern Nuclear Operating Company's Plant Farley Site Engineering organization is seeking a high performing Reactor Engineering Supervisor with an analytical mindset and strong leadership skills. This position will be located at Southern Nuclear Company's Plant Farley near Dothan, Alabama. Job Summary This position is assigned to the Site Engineering department reports to the Farley Site Engineering Director. This position is accountable for leading a group of reactor engineers responsible for implementing processes and procedures necessary to support operation of the station. Programs and processes include but are not limited to the following: reactor core monitoring, power maneuvers, special nuclear material (SNM) accountability and monitoring, fuel movement and inspection, technical specification surveillances and computer hardware and software support for core analysis and monitoring. Conduct of these activities will ensure safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations for Plant Farley. Additional key responsibilities include the technical and career development of the reactor engineering staff these duties include but are not limited to: Supervising assigned personnel, including training, preparation of annual reviews, and performance management. Ensuring proper implementation of corporate, plant, and department policies/procedures. Ensuring training and qualification of personnel in accordance with applicable procedures. Effectively and efficiently supporting plant departments in troubleshooting and problem resolution activities. Ensuring proper nuclear and industrial safety practices are followed by employees and contractors. Modeling safe work behaviors. Ensuring personnel embrace the use of Human Performance Tools. A high level of written and verbal communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills, are required to relate precise technical recommendations, issues, etc. with the corporate office, at the nuclear plant sites, with regulatory agencies, with the nuclear fuel vendor, with other utility personnel, and with various technical industry organizations. Being an active member of the site engineering leadership team and fleet reactor engineering peer team. Comprehensive knowledge of nuclear and thermal-hydraulic engineering analyses to perform state-of-the-art nuclear engineering calculations. Knowledge of nuclear fuel-related FSAR and Technical Specifications as well as site procedures to perform fuel-related operational support. Knowledge of industry experience in the operation of nuclear fuel and trends in new fuel/core designs. Reactor Engineers (including supervisor) are expected to be on call one week out of every five in support of plant operations and the emergency response organization which requires staying within 90 minutes of plant radius while on call.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or Physical Sciences/technical field from an ABET accredited college OR Professional Engineer (P.E.) license/certification is required.
  • Candidates must meet minimum ANSI/ANS 3.1 1981 standards requirements for reactor engineering; any equivalencies are evaluated on a case-by-case basis in accordance with ANSI requirements.
  • One-year nuclear power plant experience is required.
  • A minimum of eight years applicable experience in power plant design or operations, of which a maximum of four of these eight years may be fulfilled by related technical or academic training.
  • A high level of written and verbal communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills, are required to relate precise technical recommendations, issues, etc. with the corporate office, at the nuclear plant sites, with regulatory agencies, with the nuclear fuel vendor, with other utility personnel, and with various technical industry organizations.

  • Working knowledge of nuclear plant operation.
  • Working knowledge of common computer tools, including MS Word and Excel.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • A high degree of management and teamwork skills are required to effectively provide supervision to other engineers and to maintain schedules and priorities for critical work.
  • An ability to solve problems and make sound engineering decisions based on experience and appropriate industry practices in order to make timely decisions which might impact plant safety and reliability.
  • Must be able to complete the fleet and site Reactor Engineer qualifications and certifications.

Nice To Haves

  • Degree(s) in Nuclear Engineering is preferred but not required.
  • Previous leadership experience in Reactor Engineering or Operations is desired.
  • Current or previous Qualified Reactor Engineer (QRE) is desired.
  • Proficiency with core monitoring and core predictor software and other applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements related to reactor engineering is desired.
  • Proficiency with nuclear fuel related FSAR, Technical Specifications, and site procedures to support plant operation is desired.
  • Proficiency with BEACON and TracWorks is desired.
