About The Position

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is seeking a Radiological Health Physicist to join our team of professionals dedicated to protecting public health and safety. In this advanced role, you will work independently to perform inspections for regulatory compliance in a variety of medical, industrial, research and educational centers, and other various settings. The Health Physicist will monitor and evaluate all aspects of the handling, use, storage, transportation, disposal, and security of radioactive materials, and will be responsible for reviewing licensing documents and approving facilities to acquire, own, and use radioactive materials. The Health Physicist will encounter a diverse array of assignments and problems and should be able to complete complex mathematical and technical training from a scientific discipline or background.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent coursework/training in: radiological health, physical or life sciences, occupational or health safety, or nuclear technology and experience in a radiological health program including investigation and evaluation of radiological hazards, analyzing radiological data, and preparation of technical reports.
  • Valid driver's license or the ability to provide independent authorized transportation.
  • Overnight and/or regular day travel outside the city of residence is required of incumbents in this job class.
  • Principles and practices of radiation protection.
  • Federal and State laws and regulations governing radiation use, storage, handling, and disposal.
  • Health physics inspection principles, monitoring equipment, and analysis techniques.
  • Ability to assess health hazard potential, analyze reports and data, and prepare clear technical findings.
  • Ability to interpret and apply regulations, policies, and procedures related to radiation control.
  • Ability to manage radiological emergency situations effectively.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree related to the position (health physics, medical physics, nuclear engineering, radiobiology, etc.).
  • Previous experience as an inspector for an Agreement State or U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
  • Experience conducting inspections in a regulatory capacity.
  • Experience participating in large-scale emergency response activities.
  • Experience properly assessing and handling technically difficult areas.
  • Experience writing technical reports and communicating scientific and technical material clearly and concisely to a diverse audience.
  • Skill in the use of personnel dosimetry, Geiger-Mueller detectors, ionization chambers, scintillation detectors, spectrometers, and testing for removable/fixed contamination.

Responsibilities

  • Review radiation protection plans and specifications to ensure compliance with state and federal safety standards.
  • Perform technical calculations and radiological surveys at licensed or registered facilities.
  • Serve as a technical lead for license and registration application reviews, inspections, and renewals.
  • Inspect complex facilities to determine compliance, identify deficiencies, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Develop and oversee radiological monitoring and survey programs, analyzing data to assess potential hazards.
  • Recommend and coordinate enforcement actions for noncompliance.
  • Investigate radiation-related incidents and public health concerns, recommending solutions.
  • Provide technical guidance to other health physicists, agency staff, and personnel at facilities utilizing or possessing radiation sources.
  • Serve as a member of the Emergency Response Team for radiological incidents.
  • Train staff on inspection, licensing, emergency response, and environmental surveillance.
  • Stay current on radiological investigation techniques through conferences, training, and professional development.
