About The Position

The Radio Information Officer is responsible for rapidly furnishing police officers with information as requested, ensuring a high degree of speed and accuracy. This role involves operating a police radio and computer terminal, including a LEADS terminal, to retrieve and transmit crime data to centralized data banks across the country. The officer also maintains various logs, files, and records, and transmits information to other law enforcement agencies like the Ohio State Patrol. This is a multi-shift position, operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, requiring work during evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school (or G.E.D.)
  • One year of experience in data entry
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment
  • Must be able to type 30 net words per minute
  • Must be able to work evenings, nights, weekends and holidays
  • Must be able to acquire and maintain Law Enforcement Automated Data System (LEADS) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certifications within 6 months of employment
  • For Promotional Qualifications: Must be a full-time permanent or part-time permanent employee in pay grade 109 (Wage) or below, pay grade 18 (Clerical) or below, or equivalent, and been employed for 6 consecutive months by the City of Dayton in a classified Civil Service position
  • For Open Competitive Applicants: Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination and providing documentary evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity
  • A background investigation is required prior to employment
  • All candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position, including current city employees seeking transfer, promotion, demotion, etc. into a classified position
  • Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a drug screen
  • Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening

Responsibilities

  • Rapidly furnishes police officers with information as requested with a high degree of speed and accuracy
  • Operates a police radio and computer terminal
  • Retrieves and transmits crime data to centralized data banks throughout the country using a LEADS terminal
  • Maintains various logs, files and records
  • Transmits information to other law enforcement agencies, such as the Ohio State Patrol
  • Dispatches tow trucks as requested by officers
  • Upon request, furnishes confidential criminal case histories obtained from police files to officers
  • Must be able to verbally communicate and be understandable over the various police frequencies
