The Opportunity Use multidisciplinary engineering knowledge to contribute to a team designing and developing innovative medical devices or components/subsystems in support of company's strategic plan.

Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree (± 16 years) in Mechanical Engineering or related field Or an equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Minimum 3 years demonstrated experience as a system engineer on medical devices preferred.
  • Ability to work within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast paced changing environment.
  • Ability to leverage and/or engage others to accomplish projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization.
  • Multitasks, prioritizes and meets deadlines in a timely manner.
  • Strong organizational and follow-up skills, as well as an attention to detail.

Nice To Haves

  • Analytical design, Design for Six Sigma, or similar tool set preferred.
  • Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross-division business unit model preferred.
  • Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment.
  • Ability to travel, including internationally.

Responsibilities

  • Participate or lead team in system engineering responsibilities.
  • Establish requirements and specifications using knowledge of component interactions through entire system and downstream impacts of design, material selection, and processing on system function.
  • Basic use of engineering tools e.g. CAD, tolerance stacks, GD&T
  • Use empirical, numerical and experimental analysis to analyze designs and processes.
  • Involved in test method and model development.
  • Work with internal departments (assay, consumable, instrument teams) and external vendors to obtain prototype parts and to understand their capabilities and limitations.
  • Demonstrate awareness of product function and clinical environment.
  • Supports Production, Complaints, Performance investigations, design reviews and physician visits as needed.
  • Gain a detailed understanding of the quality and regulatory requirements of Abbott, FDA and ISO regulations, manage project within these requirements.
  • Gain a detailed understanding of overall schedule, manage time and task within schedule.
  • Runs complex problem solving efforts with some oversight, e.g. identifies issues resulting in minor downstream impacts; methodically completes test flow to drive conclusions/next steps
  • Leads complex investigations with minimal oversight e.g. correcting issues with component interactions during testing which may not function as intended, may be design or process related
  • Writes protocols and reports with minimal oversight. e.g. More complex spec set with multiple outputs or engineering study with multiple outputs.
  • Develops test strategies with multiple parallel arms. Plans test flow with oversight. Leads alignment through cross functional R&D teams on strategy.
  • Acts with minimum oversight on complex problems or activities. Understands the why behind projects and tasks.
  • Communicates thorough rationale for decision made Makes decisions having considered options and using analytical tools e.g. CpK, tolerance stacks, manufacturability, clinical relevance, cross-functional factors, prior projects, risk benefit, cost and compliance analysis prior to implementing changes. Able to frame up multiple scenarios to minimize impact of making a wrong decision.
  • Using past experiences towards making significant contribution successfully. e.g. Leads and communicates lessons learned, implements corrective actions or mitigates repeat issues.
  • Creates effective team environment. Influences and demonstrates good leadership. Often called to lead efforts or projects with minimal oversight. e.g. delegates, prioritizes, offers feedback, updates to Management. Perceived as a key stakeholder and a decision maker where they have expertise. Considered a technical leader in several areas of expertise.
  • Compiles and presents data in clear concise formats. Presentation skills to upper level management required
