About The Position

McKenzie Valve & Machining, a part of the global industrial organization Marmon Holdings (backed by Berkshire Hathaway), is seeking a Quality Control Inspector. This role is responsible for performing in-coming, in-process, and final inspections on all McKenzie’s parts, components, and activities, ensuring compliance with McKenzie’s Engineering Standards and QA Procedures. This includes reviewing documentation such as NDT logs, in-process inspection sheets, valve certs, ES-Standards, and QA Procedures for completeness and compliance. The QA inspector has full authority to identify nonconforming conditions, generate nonconformance reports, and hold or stop work on components pending resolution. Requirements

  • Ability to communicate technical information verbally and written.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office.
  • Possess working knowledge of applicable U.S. and Canadian regulations, AAR Interchange/MSRP’s, Marmon Rail standards/procedures, and equipment owner requirements.
  • General mechanical aptitude and ability to use gages, dimensional inspection tools, weld inspection gages, testing techniques and test equipment necessary for inspections and maintenance.
  • Ability to instruct employees on proper activities using established procedures and training material.
  • Ability to climb ladders to heights of approximately 14 feet high, bend, crawl, squat, kneel, and stretch to perform inspections.
  • Have keen visual and audio acuity to recognize various shop danger/warning signals to avoid injuries and promote a safe work environment.
  • Possess considerable stamina to perform the essential functions over a large geographical plant area.
  • Be willing and able to wear safety equipment, such as safety shoes, safety glasses, hard hats, earplugs, and respirators.
  • Have vision correctable to 20/30 for inspection activities.
  • Works to meet internal and external customer expectations at all times by fully applying oneself to the task involved, preventing errors, and developing and implementing personal quality improvement projects.
  • Required to understand the Responsible Care Management System and actively participate in activities outlined therein.
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of related work experience in railcar repair or manufacturing.
  • Ability to gain NDT Visual Testing (VT) Level II Certification per the requirements AAR M1002 Appendix T, ASNT SNT-TC-1A, ASNT CP-189, ASNT-9712 or ISO-9712.

Nice To Haves

  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector, AMPP Coating Inspector, ASQ Certified Quality Inspector/Technician certifications.
  • Knowledge of railcar components, airbrakes, welding, nondestructive testing, coatings and service equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs visual, dimensional, and mechanical inspection on components throughout all stages of processing.
  • Performs shop floor audits to ensure production operations are performed in compliance with Engineering Standards and Procedures.
  • Assures all identified nonconforming conditions are identified by reports, forms, checklist and/or the nonconformance reporting system.
  • Maintains an up-to-date inspection record of all inspections performed.
  • Reviews shop floor documentation for completeness and compliance.
  • Works with production to identify and plan for the day’s shipments to ensure verifications/inspections are made in a timely manner.
  • Reports adverse and/or non-compliant items to the responsible supervisor and QA Manager and follows-up to confirm that remedies have been put in place on items before the item is released to subsequent processes/stages. If rework will interrupt shipments the incumbent must notify the manager.
  • Participates in and actively supports quality projects, activities and Responsible Care initiatives to ensure that the Company achieves its goals.
