About The Position

The Quality Assurance & Control Manager oversees the daily operations of the laboratory to ensure efficient workflow, accurate testing, and regulatory compliance. This role manages work assignments, prioritizes analytical tasks, and maintains essential supplies to support winemaking, cellar, and bottling functions. The position will ensure the timely and precise analysis of grapes, bulk wine, bottled wine, and related microbial samples, delivering clear and prompt communication of results to key stakeholders. Additionally, the role safeguards consistency and quality of laboratory methods in alignment with winemaking specifications, operational protocols, and industry standards. The Manager also leads adherence to the Quality Management System, driving compliance with GMPs, FSMA requirements, and internal root‑cause analysis processes.

Requirements

  • B.S. Chemistry, Enology or related scientific field
  • Prior experience in winery and/or wine bottling Quality
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must be able to sit and/or stand for long periods of time and work on a computer for extended periods.
  • Lifting may be required.

Responsibilities

  • People Leadership & Development Train, supervise, and evaluate laboratory staff; set performance standards and manage scheduling and workflows. Provide technical guidance and support, partner with senior technical leadership on staff development and succession planning.
  • Laboratory Operations & Analytical Management Oversee daily laboratory operations, ensuring accurate and timely chemical, physical, and microbiological analyses. Maintain lab equipment, troubleshoot issues, and ensure efficient workflow and analysis integrity. Ensure timely and accurate data entry to support winemaking decisions. Oversee development, updating, and maintenance of SOPs and the laboratory procedures manual.
  • Winemaking, Cellar & Bottling Support Serve as liaison between Laboratory, Winemaking, Cellar, and Bottling to coordinate analytical needs. Conduct and support fermentation monitoring during and after harvest. Provide analytical and sensory support for pre‑ and post‑bottling evaluations. Coordinate tasting room activities related to blending, fining, and evaluations.
  • Quality Assurance & Compliance Lead compliance with QMS, GMPs, FSMA, and internal quality standards; perform audits and identify gaps. Conduct root‑cause analysis and implement CAPA for internal and field quality issues. Support corporate compliance programs, including proficiency testing and standardized practices. Develop and maintain QC programs for early issue detection and microbial stability verification.
  • Safety & Regulatory Oversight Maintain a safe laboratory environment; oversee chemical hygiene, MSDS documentation, and chemical inventory. Participate in facility safety initiatives such as the Cal/VPP team.
  • Cross‑Functional & Vendor Collaboration Act as primary contact for vendor technical service representatives. Facilitate communication and analytical strategy development across departments.
  • Budget & Resource Management Manage monthly and annual laboratory budgets; oversee purchasing of supplies and analytical equipment within approved guidelines.
