About The Position

The Purchasing Agent plays a key role in supporting NSU’s construction projects, site services, and day-to-day operations. This position is responsible for sourcing and purchasing equipment, materials, and services critical to the day to day operations, ensuring timely delivery and cost-effective procurement. The Purchasing Agent partners closely with Project Managers, Site Supervisors, and the Operations team to keep projects on schedule while maintaining compliance with company policies, client requirements, and regulatory standards. This role requires a self-sufficient professional who can operate independently and respond quickly to the needs of active projects and field operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain, Construction Management, or related field preferred; equivalent field experience considered.
  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on purchasing/procurement experience in construction, utilities, industrial, or field service environments
  • Proven experience sourcing construction materials, equipment, and subcontracted services (not office or indirect purchasing)
  • Experience supporting multiple active projects with competing priorities and urgent purchasing needs
  • Experience working directly with field teams, project managers, or operations teams
  • Experience supporting live operations or construction projects where timing and delivery are critical
  • Strong vendor management and negotiation skills, including pricing, terms, and lead times
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-demand environment with shifting priorities
  • Experience with ERP or purchasing systems
  • Familiarity with construction materials, site services equipment, and vendor networks.
  • ERP/purchasing system experience (SAP, ADP, or similar).
  • Strong negotiation and vendor management skills.
  • Ability to interpret construction drawings/specs for material and equipment needs.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; strong Excel skills preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Source materials, services, equipment and alternatives.
  • Issue and manage purchase orders, ensuring alignment with various timelines and needs of the business.
  • Obtain quotes and bids from suppliers/subcontractors, compare pricing, and recommend cost-effective options.
  • Establish agreements with our vendors / service providers providing discounts, incentives, or other benefits to both NSU and our clients.
  • Establish and maintain exceptional relationships with National Accounts Managers for our vendors / service providers.
  • Identify and prequalify suppliers and subcontractors, maintaining an approved vendor list.
  • Negotiate contracts, terms, and pricing with vendors and subcontractors.
  • Monitor performance, delivery schedules, and quality of goods and services.
  • Track deliveries and manage logistics to minimize downtime at construction and O&M sites.
  • Support emergency purchases and expedited orders to keep critical systems operational.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and insurance requirements for all vendors.
  • Maintain accurate records of quotes, purchase orders, and contracts for audit readiness.
  • Assist Finance with invoice reconciliation and budget tracking.
