The City of Newberry is seeking a dedicated and hardworking individual for an entry-level manual labor position in the Streets, Roads, and Cemetery Divisions . This role involves a variety of tasks related to the construction, maintenance, and repair of City streets, properties, and cemetery grounds. The ideal candidate will perform both routine and specialized tasks under the guidance of a supervisor, with opportunities to work independently as skills develop.

  • Perform general grounds maintenance , including mowing, edging, clearing brush , and removing debris.
  • Assist in ditch and retention basin clearing using hand and power tools.
  • Conduct pipe laying, fence repair, asphalt, and concrete work as needed.
  • Operate light construction equipment such as front-end loaders, trucks, and tractors.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and vehicles.
  • Assist in the installation and maintenance of traffic control signs in accordance with regulations.
  • Conduct inspections of traffic signs for compliance and perform necessary maintenance.
  • Supervise State inmate work squads in assigned tasks.
  • Participate in the layout and painting of pavement markings , including crosswalks and school zones.
  • Perform daily safety inspections of equipment and adhere to all workplace safety policies.
  • Execute all other assigned duties as required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Possession of a valid Florida Class B CDL or ability to obtain one within six months of employment .
  • Acceptable driving record as per City policy.
  • Ability to meet and maintain FDOC criteria as a Non-DC supervisor for State inmates .
  • Physical capability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods in various weather conditions .
  • Familiarity with road maintenance methods, tools, and materials .
  • Experience using power and hand tools for maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Knowledge of City roads and public properties .
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with coworkers and the public.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions .
  • Awareness of workplace safety hazards and ability to take precautionary measures .
