About The Position

The Manager, Public Works is responsible for liaising between municipalities, road authorities, industry, general applicants responding to applications and requests. The incumbent negotiates and prepares agreements for construction, maintenance, and identifies responsibilities for associated projects. The role acts as CN’s representative with Road Authorities, attends general meetings, inspects, and responds to notices, including general concerns. Moreover, the position provides support and direction pertaining to regulatory matters internally. The incumbent establishes processes and monitoring tools to address compliance requirements for crossings.

  • Minimum 5 years of railroad experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or equivalent
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
  • Knowledge of Systems Applications, and Products (SAP) and Track Inspection System (TIS)

Responsibilities

  • Attend meetings and report new and existing crossings, grade separations, local safety concerns, anti-whistling, utility crossings, fencing, and industrial clients
  • Oversee public works agreements from draft to execution stages, as well as design reviews and ensure appropriate levels of project coordination
  • Attend field inspections with government inspectors
  • Attend Road Authority project work blocks
  • Organize and assist local track forces in correcting crossing discrepancies
  • Support the CN team by clarifying regulations and standard processes, address safety concerns and assist with public works components relating to engineering projects
  • Facilitate meetings with Design and Construction (D&C) Engineers and Utility Coordinators and Public Works Officers
  • Participate in weekly safety calls
  • Support external queries regarding processes and regulations from road authorities, engineering firms, and CN rail property neighbours
  • Perform crossing inspections in the field
  • Follow up with Track Supervisors concerning any findings in the field
  • Oversee utility crossing to review drawing submissions ensuring compliance to CN and regulatory standards, as well as issuance of permits
