About The Position

Under general supervision, performs supervisory work in assigning and coordinating the work of unskilled and semi-skilled workers performing landscape development and maintenance for the City grounds and facilities; assists maintenance workers by performing mowing, trimming, edging and other duties. Employee is responsible for supervising crews performing landscaping maintenance operations of a routine nature and during the application of pesticides; assigning duties to maintenance workers; reviewing and inspecting the work of subordinates and contractors to ensure effective and efficient performance of duties. Work involves supervision of the installation and repair of irrigation systems; providing training for employees on the installation and maintenance of irrigation systems; ensures that equipment is properly operated, maintained and repaired; prepares various reports, including personnel forms and performance appraisals of subordinate employees; assists in preparation of annual budget. Under occasional supervision, performs supervisory, administrative and technical assistance work necessary to fulfill the project goals of the Public Works Department in its Building Maintenance, Field Operations and Grounds Maintenance divisions. Reports to the Public Works Manager.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent recognized certification.
  • 3 to 5 years’ experience in landscape design and development, including irrigation system maintenance, with supervisory experience preferred.
  • In addition, some related college courses and/or nursery garden experience where knowledge of area plants, shrub and tree growth has been gained, to include skill in insect and disease control by application of proper approved chemicals, is required.
  • Public Applicator Restricted Use Pesticides License is required.
  • Requires certifications (Pesticide Applicator Certification Program) and continuing education.
  • Must be licensed to apply pesticides by the Florida Department of Agriculture.

Nice To Haves

  • Membership in Florida Turfgrass Association of Florida in horticulture or related areas is highly desirable.
  • Arborist Certification is preferred. In the absence of such, one must actively pursue certification within six months of assignment to position

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, coordinates, assigns, and evaluates work of maintenance workers; determines work to be performed and requirements to carry out assignments utilizing necessary personnel and equipment; determines priorities of work to be performed and checks equipment to ensure safe and proper operating condition.
  • Makes recommendations on personnel actions, such as promotions, transfers, discharges, disciplinary actions, etc.
  • Supervises maintenance workers performing landscape maintenance operations, such as mowing, weed control, seeding, aerating, fertilizing, etc. Assists maintenance workers with the above tasks.
  • Supervises and assists in the preparation and grading of terrain, application of fertilizer, seeding, planting bulbs, cuttings, shrubs, plants, trees, laying of sod, mowing, trimming (including tree trimming), edging, weed control, seeding and aerating. Determines proper mixtures for fertilizer and weed control.
  • Designs and maintains irrigation systems to serve these landscaping projects. Supervises the installation and repair of City irrigation systems; trains employees on proper installation and repair techniques of irrigation system; trains employees on the use and application of pesticides.
  • Oversees, reviews, and assists workers in the repair and maintenance of City structures and machinery assigned to the department; develops and implements work schedules for routing assigned tasks and special events; inspects work in progress and completed work.
  • Ensures that work is being performed efficiently and effectively; enforces applicable safety requirements to ensure the safety of residents and workers.
  • Ensures the proper operation, care, and maintenance of equipment used in maintaining grounds and facilities.
  • Assists Public Works Manager in preparing the annual budget by preparing cost estimates of landscaping construction/maintenance; monitoring expenditures; recommending equipment purchases.
  • Plans and designs City grounds.
  • Makes recommendations for improved production methods of maintenance workers.
  • Assists Public Works Manager and workers in resolving work problems.
  • Performs other related work as required.
