About The Position

This position is supervisory and advanced level, skilled and semi-skilled manual labor, constructing, maintaining and repairing roadways, drainage systems and associated assets. Work is performed under general supervision of the Public Works Supervisor.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
  • Some related manual labor experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) years' experience in public works maintenance and construction work, or similar field.
  • FDOT certificate of maintenance of traffic, or the ability to obtain within the first six (6) months.
  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License.
  • Must possess a valid Florida Class “B” Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • A comparable amount of training, education or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
  • Knowledge of general facilities and street maintenance tasks and procedures.
  • Knowledge of ground maintenance and installation and proper equipment.
  • Knowledge of leadership skills including communications, motivation, and performance feedback.
  • Skill in operation and maintenance of equipment and tools related to the position.
  • Intermediate skill in the operation of computers and related equipment.
  • Basic skill in writing routine reports and documents.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor under adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees and participates in all functions of Public Works crew.
  • Leads crews and participates in maintaining concrete, asphalt, drainage facilities, signage, markings, and vegetation within public right of ways.
  • Provides routine repair of asphalt roads, sidewalks, and trails including pothole repair, road patching, road resurfacing, and road base repair.
  • Demolishes, forms, and places concrete necessary for maintenance of sidewalks, curbs, inlets, etc. associated with public right of ways.
  • Leads crews and participates in cleaning and maintaining drainage facilities including pipes, structures, underground drains, inlets, and basins.
  • Mows, maintains, grades, and cleans open drainage swales and basins.
  • Mows, maintains, and cleans road right of ways including vegetation cut back, trimming, edging, pruning of vegetation, irrigation system repair, sweeping, litter and leaf collection, application of herbicide, and application of fertilizer.
  • Performs routine landscaping maintenance of public grounds including mowing, trimming, edging, grading, sod removal and installation, irrigation system repair, litter and leaf collection, application of herbicide, and application of fertilizer.
  • Oversees and sets up barricades and other temporary traffic control devices in accordance with standards and provides flagging services for work crews working within flowing traffic.
  • Services, performs maintenance on, and washes vehicles and equipment.
  • Proficient in the use and maintenance of power hand tools such as drills, saws, chainsaws, etc. as needed to complete assigned tasks.
  • Coordinates between departments on jobs and shared equipment as needed.
  • Assists and supports City activities that require moving and lifting heavy items.
  • Assists and supports City special events and programs by closing streets, erecting tents, setting up tables and chairs, etc. As required, work may consist of working outside of typical scheduled working hours.
  • Operates vehicles, light and heavy equipment. Advanced skill in the operation of equipment, tools, and instruments used for assigned work.
  • Comprehends and adheres to City policies, procedures, and safety regulations while performing tasks.
  • Tracks and records necessary information on work orders.
  • Determines necessary materials to complete assigned tasks.
  • Performs related duties as required. Available and responsible to respond outside of normal working hour for tree mitigation (i.e. clearing roadway from tree debris), maintenance of traffic support (support other City personnel performing responsive work), etc.
  • Proactive approach to planning, prioritizing projects, assigning work tasks, using equipment, maintaining records, monitoring work quality and work schedules, ensuring crew safety, training employees, and providing performance feedback.
  • Instructs employees in proper work methods and standards; monitors crew work quality; ensures adherence to time schedules and safe work practices.
  • Performs other related duties as required/assigned.
