Job Summary Performs administrative duties and lower priority police work to assist police officers and citizens at division stations and in the field or notifies citizens of outstanding warrants and handles inquires regarding warrant notification and department procedures. Job Description - Overview The Public Service Officer performs a wide range of administrative tasks and lower priority police work to assist police officers, crossing guards, and citizens at division stations and in the field. Processes arrests and warrant information and performs any other non -sworn police tasks in support of the Police Department.

Requirements

  • EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED.
  • EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of public contact experience.
  • EQUIVALENCY: Thirty (30) college semester credit hours will meet the education and experience requirements.
  • LICENSE: Valid driver’s license with good driving record.
  • OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Eighteen (18) years of age. Must pass an intensive background investigation and drug test. No FELONY or Class A MISDEMEANOR convictions. No Class B MISDEMEANOR convictions within the last ten (10) years. No family violence convictions. Cannot currently be on deferred adjudication for any FELONY, Class A or Class B MISDEMEANOR.
  • Availability to work various shifts.
  • Knowledge of hiring and personnel principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of state laws pertaining to jail facilities and detention of prisoners.
  • Knowledge of fingerprinting techniques
  • Knowledge of basic supervision principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of state traffic laws, penal codes, and city ordinances governing school zones.
  • Knowledge of City of Dallas ordinances, familiarity with state of Texas traffic laws and penal code.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematical principles.
  • Ability to complete written police reports.
  • Ability to file documents according to various sequential arrangements
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships

  • Ability to deal with unruly prisoners.

Responsibilities

  • Processes incoming and outgoing prisoners and escorts prisoners to and from assigned cells according to established procedures; provides supervision and control of inmates during booking and performs initial physical search, fingerprinting, and booking activities.
  • Processes all administrative paper work related to arrests, detentions, incidents, daily activity sheets, time cards, scheduling, and payroll; files all appropriate accident reports.
  • Monitors, watches, and reports on prisoner activities to ensure no disturbances occur; maintains detention center logs and writes various reports related to specific incidents; restrains prisoners when needed and ensures a safe and efficient jail environment.
  • Operates telecommuter call-out system to notify citizens of outstanding warrants.
  • Files and retrieves paperwork such as reports and subpoenas to respond to citizen or police officer requests.
  • Performs research regarding arrest warrants to provide information to citizens; assists police officers with researching, investigating, and performing other administrative tasks.
  • Gathers and compiles numerical data to prepare manpower and activity reports for police officers.
  • Maintains and distributes equipment and vehicles for police officers.
  • Directs traffic at crime scene to allow police officers time to investigate crime.
  • Assists, supports, and participates in interviewing, hiring, and training school crossing guards providing them with all the information necessary to implement their duties; ensures appropriate staff is available to meet the needs of all school areas; observes school crossing guards in the field to ensure safety procedures are followed and evaluate their performance.
  • Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.
