About The Position

The purpose of the job is to serve as a first responder who provides emergency and non-emergency public safety services to the Broward College community. Responsible for fostering a safe and secure environment and acting as a deterrent to crime and unsafe behaviors through a variety of proactive patrol techniques/strategies and crime prevention/awareness measures. Responsible for enforcing local, state, and federal laws, and college policies and procedures. Investigates, responds to, and documents crimes, disturbances, and other public safety-related incidents occurring at Broward College. Performs related work as directed. The Public Safety Officer must be able to successfully complete the Public Safety Academy when scheduled to attend, usually within the first six months of their initial hire date as a Public Safety Officer. ________________________________________ This position allows eligible veterans and their spouses to claim Veterans’ Preference pursuant to Florida Statute 295. Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of one year prior experience in related field of work required.
  • Must be able to successfully obtain CPR with AED certification within six month of initial hire date.
  • Florida Class D Security Officer License or active law enforcement certification required.
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License required or, as a condition of continued employment, a Valid Florida Driver’s License within 30 days after being employed by the College.
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Ability to use fire extinguishers, golf carts, and patrol vehicles required.
  • Working knowledge of public safety, law enforcement, and fire/life safety techniques.
  • Basic knowledge of criminal and civil law.
  • Basic knowledge of crime prevention methods such as community-oriented problem solving and community-oriented policing.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use all systems and procedures relevant to the position which includes, but is not limited to, computers and applicable software applications, fire alarms and extinguishers, intrusion alarms, access control and camera monitoring systems, key control, emergency management procedures, vehicles and vehicle jump starters.
  • Ability to work with students, faculty, staff, and the general public.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and make decisions under stress and during critical incidents.
  • Ability to demonstrate department values of service, honesty, accountability, respect, and professionalism.
  • Ability to orally communicate effectively with others, to include the use of a public safety radio system.
  • Ability to hear and understand calls for assistance, radio communications, supervisor instructions, emergency announcements, fire alarms, etc.
  • Ability to observe and detect signs of theft, dangerous/suspicious behavior, unsecured doors/windows, etc.
  • Ability to effectively communicate through written correspondence to include, but not limited to, incident/case reports, email and other electronic communications, and daily logs.
  • Ability to physically assist others during an emergency or critical incident.
  • Ability to successfully complete all training as provided and/or required and maintain related certifications.
  • Ability to work varying work hours and days including evenings, midnights, weekends, and holidays.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate Degree or college credit hours in a public safety related field preferred.
  • Prior experience in campus public safety/law enforcement, or related public safety discipline preferred.
  • Certification in first aid preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Employs a variety of proactive patrol techniques and strategies in a vehicle, by bicycle, or on-foot to foster increased safety and security of all BC-affiliated persons and property. Engages in community-oriented problem solving, community-oriented policing, and other crime prevention measures.
  • Responds to assigned calls for service, emergency and non-emergency situations, and critical incidents. Initiates calls for service through direct observation and citizen request. Acts as a first responder by providing initial assessment of situations and making determination of appropriate response, which may include administering first aid and life support to victims. Follows and employs principles of Incident Command System (ICS) when addressing developing critical incidents.
  • Conducts and/or assists in various types of investigations. Conducts interviews, collects property and evidence, and secures crime scenes. Documents findings and prepares written detailed case reports and logs, as required.
  • Operates miscellaneous equipment including, but not limited to, computers and other information technology equipment, communications equipment, AEDs and other first aid/life safety equipment, cameras and video surveillance equipment, vehicles, vehicle jump starters.
  • Performs a number of community service functions including, but not limited to, conducting safety escorts, completing inspections and reports regarding safety hazards, and participating in crime prevention/awareness and community outreach to students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Participates in on-going training and assists in training new employees as required and directed.
  • Assists in parking enforcement, vehicle and pedestrian traffic direction, special events security, surveillance activities, and other unique assignments.
  • Processes evidence, prepares court cases, and provides legal testimony.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned and appropriate.
