Job Summary: Under supervision general supervision of a Police Lieutenant or other assigned supervisory or management staff, performs responsible duties related to Department of Public Safety's digital and physical evidence, evidence collection, storage, transportation and final disposition.  Responsible for the distribution, replication, transfer of body worn and in-car video digital evidence per supervisory or legal requests in accordance with department policy.  Acts to protect the integrity of evidence throughout the judicial process, and to ensure compliance with all State and local laws regarding the storage and disposition of property and evidence.

Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Processes requests from the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority (MNAA) Legal department for body worn or in car video per supervisory or legal requests; copies, prepares and maintains confidential and evidentiary documents, CDs, DVDs, storage or hard drives, photographs, other evidence and prepares transmission of digital evidence; coordinates with appropriate staff for the transfer and review of such evidence; prepares evidence for court and documents chain-of-custody.
  • Collects, receives, documents, categorizes, reviews, and verifies a wide variety of property and evidence, including but not limited to, hazardous and toxic materials, chemicals and substances and firearms, determines and arranges transportation of evidence for additional outside analysis or storage, while maintaining a complete chain-of-custody.
  • Receives requests from the public and outside agencies; provides information regarding procedures for obtaining property and evidence and laws governing release.
  • Performs research, determines ownership, and if evidence can be released or destroyed in compliance with department policies, procedures, and State laws; obtains authorization and arranges for the destruction and disposal of property and evidence including hazardous and toxic materials, chemicals, and substances; prepares correspondence to property owner for the release of property.
  • Maintains a variety of records regarding the receipt, storage, release, and destruction of property and evidence.
  • Assists in the audits of multimedia evidence, as directed, to ensure compliance with the applicable laws, policies, and CALEA (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies) standards.
  • Ensure monthly video reviews/logs are completed by each shift’s Lieutenant to ensure CALEA compliance.
  • Ensure daily test video review logs/reports are complete by shift Lieutenants to ensure CALEA compliance.
  • Assists with audits of property and evidence room performed by assigned department personnel, verifying location; arranges for and participate in narcotic, guns, and money audits.
  • Reviews and documents proper usage/function of recruit body worn cameras while the recruit is in training and not assigned to shift.
  • Redacts bodycam and in-car camera videos as required by policy prior to their release.
  • Maintains physical and digital records and storage systems and keeps them in an organized manner.
  • Maintains the confidentiality and integrity of sensitive information obtained or reviewed.
  • Maintains legal custody and control of the property and evidence room card access; moves and shifts property and evidence as required to maintain storage levels; requisition materials and supplies, as necessary.
  • Uses safety precautions and follows Department of Public Safety procedures to properly handle firearms, weapons, chemical samples, blood, DNA, narcotics, syringes, toxic materials, money, valuable items, illicit material, and alcoholic beverages to prevent injury, avoid contamination, and assure chain-of-custody.
  • Works with sworn personnel to facilitate victim viewings of property and evidence, ensuring the safekeeping and chain-of-custody of said property and evidence.
  • Testifies in court regarding handling and chain-of-custody of evidence.
  • Builds and maintains positive working relationships with co-workers, other MNAA employees, other agency representatives and the public using principles of good customer service.
