About The Position

A public safety communications center in Washington, DC is seeking experienced Public Safety Dispatchers to support emergency and non-emergency response operations within a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) / Emergency Communications Center (ECC) . This role is responsible for coordinating and monitoring the response of Police and Fire/EMS units while maintaining accurate, real-time communication during critical incidents.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 1 year of experience as a released Emergency Communications Officer in a multi-discipline public safety PSAP
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong multitasking and prioritization abilities
  • Typing and computer proficiency of at least 25 words per minute
  • Ability to remain calm, focused, and effective in high-stress situations
  • Ability to follow instructions, protocols, and standard operating procedures
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written)
  • Willingness to work assigned schedules based on jurisdictional needs
  • Contract employees must comply with all applicable jurisdictional policies and procedures, including human resources and progressive discipline policies

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in two or more of the following disciplines preferred: Call Taking Fire/Rescue Radio Operations Law Enforcement Radio Operations

Responsibilities

  • Dispatch emergency and non-emergency calls for Police and Fire/EMS units using approved dispatch formats and response plans
  • Coordinate and monitor unit activity to ensure timely and appropriate emergency response
  • Operate assigned primary and secondary radio channels
  • Maintain control of radio channels and utilize backup systems during primary system outages
  • Practice proper radio communication techniques and issue required notifications
  • Determine the type and level of emergency assistance required
  • Relay messages accurately and completely to responding units
  • Document all events thoroughly with pertinent information received
  • Update and modify event classifications as additional information becomes available
