As a Public Health Specialist (Program Assistant) supporting the Schuyler County Health Department, you will assist with daily program operations, basic data tasks, community outreach activities, and general administrative support. This role helps strengthen local public health capacity by ensuring programs run smoothly, information is well-organized, and staff have the support needed to carry out public health initiatives. Position Specific Responsibilities include: Working under the direction of the Public Health Director, Deputy Director, and program staff, the Public Health Specialist (Program Assistant) will help ensure programs align with county and state public health priorities, respond to emerging community needs, and promote equitable access to public health services. Position-specific responsibilities may include: Assist the Public Health Director, Deputy Director, and program staff with routine tasks that support county public health programs and services. Provide general support for public health initiatives such as chronic disease prevention, maternal and child health, emergency preparedness, and environmental health activities. Support preparation of basic program materials such as summaries, data tables, outreach handouts, meeting notes, and simple reports Assist with scheduling, preparing materials, and taking notes for program meetings, partner workgroups, and trainings. Maintain organized files, documentation, and records to support program tracking and meet county and NYSDOH requirements. Help coordinate outreach activities, including assembling materials, supporting event logistics, and communicating with community partners as directed. Provide administrative support during public health emergencies or infectious disease responses, such as assisting with data entry, call tracking, or distributing materials. Assist with other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor’s degree is preferred.
  • Must be a NYS resident with familiarity of NYS geography; cities/towns/locations.
  • A flexible, adaptive, and composed attitude with the ability to interact professionally with culturally diverse individuals.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Critical thinking and sound judgment required.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Experience leading tracking and reporting processes.
  • Proficiency with computers including data entry into electronic tracking systems and running summary reports.
  • Phenomenal work ethic with a positive attitude.
  • Employment is contingent on completion of a background check by NY State.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in public health and/or clinical medicine a plus.
  • Preference given to those who live within commuting distance of the official work location.
  • Familiarity with and experience working in a health system in NYS is preferred. This includes, but is not limited to, hospitals, health care providers, health regulatory organizations, or schools.
  • Candidates with the ability to work on-site or in a hybrid capacity at the Schuyler County Health Department are preferred.
