As a Public Health Specialist II, you will serve as a key contributor to Washington County Public Health, supporting essential public health programs and advancing department-wide quality and performance efforts. Working under the general direction of the Public Health Director and/or Director of Patient Services, this role collaborates closely with department leadership to strengthen Public Health programs. While the role does not involve direct supervision of staff, the Public Health Specialist II plays an important part in coordinating activities, supporting program implementation, and contributing to the department’s continuous improvement efforts. The Public Health Specialist II performs related duties as required.

  • Assists with the implementation of Public Health programs, including but not limited to: Lead Poisoning Prevention, Chronic Disease Prevention, Communicable Disease, Injury Prevention and Control, Family Health, Early Intervention, Preschool programs, Harm Reduction, and other assigned initiatives.
  • Supports the delivery of education, outreach, and community engagement activities related to the above programs.
  • Provides assistance with program operations and public health duties as required to ensure successful execution of department initiatives.
  • Coordinates program activities with Public Health Educators and/or Registered Professional Nurses to support efficient service delivery and program performance.
  • Assists Public Health Educators or Registered Professional Nurses with training, resource development, and program-specific orientation for assigned program areas.
  • Participates in Public Health Emergency Preparedness activities as trained and assigned, including supporting response operations when needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to support overall public health operations and departmental goals.
  • This position is intended to execute complex tasks independently as well as coordinate the tasks of other team members.
  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required. Experience in clinical medicine and/or public health a plus.
  • At least one year of experience within a health, public health, education, human services, or community-based organization, or institutional setting.
  • Experience working in a health system in NYS. This includes but is not limited to hospitals, health care providers, health regulatory organizations, community resources, social services, or schools in NYS.
  • A flexible, adaptive, and composed attitude with the ability to interact professionally with culturally diverse individuals.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Critical thinking and sound judgment required.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Experience leading tracking and reporting processes.
  • Proficiency with computers including data entry into electronic tracking systems and running summary reports.
  • Phenomenal work ethic with a positive attitude.
  • Employment is contingent on completion of a background check by NY State.
  • Must be a NYS resident with familiarity of NYS geography; cities/towns/locations.
  • Own telephone, computer, wireless internet (WiFi), and electronic equipment.
  • Must have access to a working PC with Windows 10, Antivirus Protection: Windows Defender and Windows Firewall; or Mac with Apple OS X 10.13, Antivirus Protection: Sophos; and personal mobile device to use for this job.
  • Candidates with the ability to work on-site at the Washington County Health Department are preferred.
  • Preference given to those who live within commuting distance to the official work location.
  • Experience in clinical medicine and/or public health a plus.
