About The Position

The Vermont Department of Health - Burlington District Office is seeking a dynamic and organized Nutrition Assistant to join our collaborative team of public health professionals serving families in Chittenden County. In this role, you will directly support the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), helping protect and promote the best health for all Vermonters. This is a full-time, in-person position that blends nutrition education, participant support, and program administration duties in a collaborative, mission-driven environment. This position is not eligible for remote work. What to ExpectThis is a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. Telephones ring frequently, and staff actively manage multiple online platforms, including a texting system, office email, participant portal, and WIC electronic scheduling system. There are frequent opportunities to engage in office-wide and program initiatives, including lactation support, lead screening, and emergency preparedness efforts. The ideal candidate can move seamlessly between tasks, stay organized amid regular interruptions, while always maintaining a welcoming and professional presence. Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in a health related field OR two (2) years of experience in a health related environment.
  • Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position. In accordance with AHS Policy 4.02, Hiring Standards, Vermont and/or national criminal record checks, as well as DMV and adult and child abuse registry checks, as appropriate to the position under recruitment, will be conducted on candidates, with the exception of those who are current classified state employees seeking transfer, promotion or demotion into an AHS classified position or are persons exercising re-employment (RIF) rights.

Nice To Haves

  • Degree in nutrition or health, education or a human services field.
  • Experience in a health or nutrition related community setting.

Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one certification services, nutrition education, and support to WIC participants
  • Use motivational interviewing and problem-solving skills to address nutrition related questions from participants and community partners
  • Deliver culturally sensitive and inclusive services, including coordinating and utilizing in-person and telephonic interpretation services
  • Assist with planning and coordinating maternal and child health nutrition education activities in the WIC office and with community partners
  • Support clerical staff with duties that support enrollment, recruitment, retention, and overall office operations
