About The Position

Educating the public about the risks associated with mosquito-borne disease and the data-backed practices that the Metropolitan Mosquito Control District uses is an important part of the District’s Integrated Pest Management plan. The Public Affairs Assistant will provide critical support in this area by helping to create and produce educational content that can be distributed in a variety of ways. This seasonal internship position is ideal for a candidate who may be studying communications or wants to gain experience utilizing different tools and techniques to distribute important information with creativity and an open mind. No mosquito or insect expertise required!  Class Summary: Under the supervision of the Public Affairs Manager, coordinate and improve District communications including public events, presentations, social media, press releases, and online content.

Requirements

  • Experience in web-based communications, writing, public speaking, or demonstrated capability to perform duties.
  • Ability to use Microsoft 365 – Outlook, PowerPoint, OneDrive
  • Basic knowledge of social media websites.
  • Collaborate with staff from various departments.
  • Ability to capture and edit photographs.
  • Ability to think creatively and implement new ideas.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.

Nice To Haves

  • The ability to use photo or video editing software like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, or something similar is helpful, but not required.
  • Strong verbal communication skills are helpful.

Responsibilities

  • Create and update interactive content for presentations.
  • Assist with outreach and scheduling of events and public speaking opportunities.
  • Deliver presentations to schools, community groups, and other relevant organizations.
  • Assist with developing and implementing a social media plan.
  • Develop and write blog posts for the District website.
  • Capture and edit photos and videos from various aspects of District functions.
  • Write, shoot, and edit videos for the District website and social media.
  • Develop press releases and assist with media relations.
  • Produce posters, handouts, and other visual materials.
  • Work with main office and field facility staff to create and implement ideas for public communications.
  • Assist with Public Affairs and District Communications Team projects as needed.
  • Assist with the Front Desk as needed including responding to phone calls and e-mails from residents and entering service requests into the District database.
