About The Position

This position will monitor the inventory of necessary operations supplies, perform and/or coordinate repairs and maintenance while on shift, and clean to maintain a healthy and pleasant environment for our guests. Beyond traditional custodial work, Janitors at Interfaith Works act as a steady, supportive presence within our locations. Cleaning is an act of advocacy. This role is a key player in our “pare down” days – a process that requires a lack of judgment and the ability to help guests let go of items in a way that feels safe and supportive. Due to the nature of the position, you must be available to work days, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of safety hazards and proper use of cleaning and sanitizing products (ex. bleach).
  • Ability to keep the shelter clean and orderly.
  • Ability to interact with staff and guests in a professional, polite and courteous manner.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to navigate and use email.
  • Ability to maintain firm professional boundaries while remaining empathetic and approachable to individuals in crisis.
  • Ability to remain calm and de-escalate potential tension during the cleaning of personal spaces.
  • Basic understanding of (or willingness to learn) how trauma affects behavior, particularly regarding personal space and possessions.
  • Must have a working phone for communication
  • Ability to work extended hours when required.
  • Ability to perform continuous physical activity for the duration of the shift, including walking, standing, reaching, and repetitive motions.
  • Ability to frequently lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds (such as furniture, large trash bags, or bulk cleaning supplies) and occasionally push/pull heavier loads with assistance.
  • Ability to navigate confined spaces, including under and around beds, and the physical dexterity to perform deep-cleaning tasks in awkward positions.
  • Ability to maintain a high pace of work.
  • Willingness and ability to safely clean and dispose of human waste, bodily fluids, and drug paraphernalia (e.g., used needles) following strict bloodborne pathogen protocols and OSHA standards.
  • Comfort working in environments where pests–such as lice or rodents–may be present; ability to follow heat-treatment and sanitization protocols to mitigate infestations.
  • Frequent use of industrial-grade cleaning chemicals and disinfectants (e.g., bleach, ammonia, degreaser). Must strictly adhere to Safety Data Sheets and wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs general, routine custodial duties to include dusting, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning restrooms, and restocking paper and soap supplies.
  • Performs routine maintenance to custodial equipment and supplies.
  • Empties trash receptacles, disposes trash into compactors and/or dumpsters, and bags trash for proper disposal. Delivers trash to waste facilities as necessary.
  • Assist with daily “pare down” of shelter dorm rooms including removal of excess belongings and sanitization of bed areas.
  • Reports needs and concerns to management, which may include submitting or recommending work orders and checking supply levels.
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Performs cleaning functions specific to the assigned facilities and/or based on seasonal/project requirements.
  • Build professional, trusting relationships with guests. Use active listening and patience when cleaning in high-traffic areas or high-stress personal living areas.
  • Maintain high standards of sanitization, including the proper handling of biohazardous materials (if applicable) and bed mat disinfection.
  • May provide one-on-one support to guests struggling with hoarding behaviors or clutter, using trauma-informed engagement to encourage a clean environment while respecting guest’s dignity and personal history.
  • May provide vendors with access to areas for cleaning or repairs and may answer basic questions.
  • May report issues with vendors to on-site managers.
  • May assist or perform snow removal activities and minor maintenance, such as replacing light bulbs, adjusting furniture, or other similar activities.
  • May assist in landscaping as needed.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • Facility deep cleaning on a regular schedule to include mopping, cleaning of bathroom facilities, community kitchen cleaning, deep cleaning of dormitory spaces, and light grounds maintenance.
