About The Position

The Psychiatrist provides culturally sensitive, comprehensive psychiatric care to United Indian Health Services (UIHS) clients, including diagnostic evaluation, medication management, crisis intervention, and consultation within a multidisciplinary, community-based behavioral health model. The psychiatrist collaborates closely with medical and behavioral health teams, supervises and mentors mid-level psychiatric providers, and contributes to quality improvement, training, and policy development to enhance mental health services across the organization.

Requirements

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Completion of an ACGME-accredited residency in Psychiatry.
  • Board certification or board eligibility in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
  • Valid, unrestricted license to practice medicine in any US state.
  • Valid DEA certificate and BLS certification.
  • Meets all requirements for clinical staff membership as outlined in the UIHS Clinical Staff Bylaws.
  • Proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, and presentations.
  • Must be able to work in an Electronic Health Records (EHR) system.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conforms to prescribed style and format.
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
  • All individuals must demonstrate a commitment to the provision of culturally sensitive counseling services to American Indians.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct psychiatric care as credentialed and privileged through UIHS, including evaluations, diagnoses, medication management, and treatment planning for clients of all ages.
  • Conducts appropriate psychiatric assessments, orders and interprets diagnostic tests, and prescribes medications and other treatments consistent with best practices.
  • Delivers psychiatric care via in-person and telepsychiatry services to UIHS sites as needed.
  • Consults with and provides oversight to psychiatric nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other behavioral health staff.
  • Collaborates with primary care providers, behavioral health clinicians, and community partners to ensure integrated, coordinated care.
  • Participates in care coordination, hospitalization and discharge planning, and referrals to subspecialists as clinically indicated.
  • Provides after-hours psychiatric consultation or on-call coverage as assigned.
  • Participates in peer review, quality improvement activities, and development of clinical policies and procedures.
  • Documents all clinical services using UIHS’s electronic health record system in a timely, accurate, and professional manner.
  • Contributes to education and training efforts for staff regarding psychiatric care and culturally appropriate practices.
  • Must be willing to learn more about the American Indian culture and attend at least one Cultural Presentation/Training per year.
  • Must be willing to work with American Indian/Alaska Native people and demonstrate cultural awareness and humility
  • Must be willing to deliver services in a culturally responsive manner.
  • Adheres to accreditation and compliance standards/guideline
  • Other duties may be assigned.
