University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking a Psychiatric Nursing Assistant to perform specific tasks to assist members of the Nursing team in providing patient care under the direct supervision of Registered Nurses. The role involves establishing therapeutic relationships with patients, families, and the multi-disciplinary team, participating in patient care planning, and documenting patient behavior. Key aspects include maintaining patient safety and security, providing physical care and assistance, supervising patients during activities, and identifying and intervening in potential crisis situations. The assistant will also perform patient personal hygiene tasks, take vital signs, clean equipment and patient areas, set up rooms for admissions, and transport patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies. The position is located on the Neuropsychiatric Unit (2JPW), a 22-bed unit specializing in care for patients with general psychiatric conditions, particularly thought disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar, and other psychoses. It also offers specialized services for patients with intellectual disabilities and co-occurring mental illness presenting challenging behaviors. The role requires working in an environment with conflicting demands, urgent timelines, and managing multiple assignments while maintaining attention to detail and strong communication skills.
