About The Position

Reporting to the Manager of Admissions, the Admissions Counselor plays a vital front‑line role in supporting patients as they begin their inpatient behavioral health care journey. You will provide administrative and clerical support to the clinical team, guide patients through the admission process, and help ensure safe, efficient, and compassionate transitions into care. This role is ideal for someone detail‑oriented, patient‑focused, and comfortable working in a fast‑paced behavioral health environment.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Comfort working with behavioral health populations
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records such as EPIC

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience in hospital registration, admissions, or insurance verification

Responsibilities

  • Obtain accurate demographic and insurance information and complete patient registration in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Verify insurance eligibility and enter insurance authorizations into the EMR, including obtaining required electronic authorizations or notifications.
  • Complete pre‑registration and prepare all necessary admitting paperwork.
  • Greet and check in patients; explain admitting documents; obtain vital signs; and conduct suicide screenings, communicating any concerns to the admitting provider.
  • Escort patients to inpatient units as needed.
  • Maintain and update the electronic admissions board throughout each shift.
  • Communicate effectively with referral sources, colleagues, and clinical staff.
  • Provide follow‑up resource information to patients who are unexpectedly discharged after evaluation.
  • Update facility capacity on the Massachusetts Behavioral Health Access (MABHA) website.
  • Adhere to guidelines and expectations of regulatory bodies such as DMH, DPH, the Joint Commission, and payors.
