About The Position

The position is part of a global Corporate Advanced Engineering (CAE) Advanced Technology Development Team. The Prototype Vehicle technician is a hands-on versatile expert in constructing prototype vehicles, systems and products to showcase new technologies. Successful candidate will be versatile in electrical and mechanical systems with a creative can-do attitude. Duties range from procurement of vehicles to fabricating, wiring, debugging, and procurement as appropriate.

Requirements

  • Formal technical training such as: Associate Degree in Automotive Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, or Mechanical Engineering Technology
  • Completion of a recognized technical trade program
  • Certifications in advanced automotive systems or electrical systems
  • Certifications: High Voltage Qualified by a recognized certification (NFPA 70e, OSHA 1910.269, etc.) or willingness to pursue and achieve certification.
  • Experience modifying and constructing/debugging vehicle systems: propulsion, low-voltage and high-voltage systems, batteries, and thermal management
  • Proficiency in welding, soldering, and general fabrication techniques
  • Ability to use diagnostic tools and generate/interpret technical drawings
  • 5-10 years Previous experience
  • 3-5 years experience modifying vehicles, demonstrating capability to remove/modify/replace major component and systems (engines, transmissions, electric drive units, batteries)
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills
  • Ability to work onsite and adapt to dynamic project requirements
  • Flexibility and Creativity – thinking outside the box to fix complex problems

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience at an automotive OEM or Tier 1 supplier (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Lead the build and construction of prototype vehicles of varying scale & finish expectations, from passenger cars & light-commercial-vehicles, as well as contributing to other projects in areas such as large grid-attached systems and power conversion products.
  • Support fabrication, documentation as needed (drawings/schematics/thermal layout), low & high voltage harness design, etc.
  • Communicate and collaborate with internal customers/partners (including executive leadership)
  • Interact with outside partners (suppliers, service providers, consultancies, contractors) as necessary.
  • Able to work on high voltage vehicles and laboratory equipment, including instrumentation
  • Occasional regional travel expected
  • Support a shared corporate garage and high voltage labs from a cleanliness and organizing perspective, including supporting audits, safety & compliance .
  • Procurement and Maintenance: Source parts and supplies (tires, fluids, etc.) to maintain prototype vehicles to ensure operational readiness. Contract mobile services as necessary.
  • Adhere and Maintain Safety and Compliance: Operate all tools and equipment safely, including welding, soldering, and fabrication tools, following high-voltage safety protocols.
  • Testing and Validation: Support functional testing and troubleshooting of prototype systems.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with engineers and technicians and professionally represent a high-visibility corporate cross-enterprise organization.
