About The Position

The Project Manager within University IT Services at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee provides leadership for complex AI and technology initiatives that advance institutional priorities and strengthen campus operations. This position is responsible for guiding projects through their full lifecycle while ensuring adherence to UWM’s established standards for security, privacy, compliance, and model‑risk governance. The role requires effective coordination with campus stakeholders, technical teams, and external partners to support timely, well‑structured project outcomes. In addition, the Project Manager contributes to the university’s educational mission by mentoring student staff, fostering their professional growth, and supporting their engagement in project work within a collaborative learning environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree by date of hire
  • Three or more years of professional experience managing information technology projects through full lifecycle completion, including planning, execution, monitoring, and delivery
  • Demonstrated experience selecting and applying appropriate project management methodologies, techniques, and tools (e.g., waterfall, agile, hybrid) to achieve project objectives

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree in Information Systems or a related field by the date of hire
  • Formal training in project management methodologies, demonstrated through a PMP certification or equivalent credential
  • Experience using Microsoft Project (Desktop and/or Online) for project planning, scheduling, and resource management
  • Experience using Microsoft Power BI to develop or interpret project dashboards and reporting
  • Experience with AI project strategic planning and use‑case implementation, including coordinating discovery, development, deployment, and post‑launch activities
  • Experience working in a higher‑education environment, including familiarity with academic or administrative technology needs

Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end delivery of multiple AI implementation projects which could run concurrently or consecutively (5–7 use cases), from intake and discovery through production deployment and post-launch stabilization
  • Ensure AI projects follow organizational governance for security, privacy, model risk, and compliance, including required reviews and documentation
  • Creates a project plan, monitors progress and performance against the project plan, and identifies, resolves, or escalates risks and issues
  • Manages the activities of outside contractors to ensure they are integrated into the project and that the organization receives satisfactory standards of service
  • Facilitates the estimation of project costs, resources, and time required to complete the assigned phase of a project and monitors activities, negotiates for resources, and assigns tasks to ensure these targets are met. Follows established change control processes if targets can no longer be met
  • Prepares regular reports to communicate the status of the project within and beyond the project team
  • Sets priorities, allocates tasks, and collaborates with project staff to meet project targets and milestones
  • Mentor and coach student staff in project management and core professional skills
  • Provide guidance to help students meet project goals and complete assigned tasks
  • Delegate work based on individual strengths and abilities, offering leadership and direction
