About The Position

The Project Engineer is a field‑based, project‑specific role supporting trenchless construction activities on the Ballard Conveyance Project, part of Seattle’s Ship Canal Water Quality Project (SCWQP). Reporting to the Project Manager, this role focuses primarily on engineering documentation, reporting, and field coordination, with limited hands‑on field tasks related to quality and compliance. The Project Engineer will support complex underground work, including conveyance piping, microtunneling, shafts, and flow diversion structures. This opportunity is well suited for a junior‑level engineer seeking hands‑on exposure to large‑scale trenchless and underground infrastructure construction in an active field environment. This is a project‑based position, with an expected duration of approximately 7 months.

Requirements

  • Engineering degree or diploma in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or a related discipline
  • 1–5 years of experience supporting construction, heavy civil, or infrastructure projects
  • Strong organizational, documentation, and reporting skills
  • Comfort working in a field‑based construction environment with active operations
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to coordinate effectively between field and office teams
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work effectively under pressure in a fast‑paced, schedule‑driven environment

Nice To Haves

  • Working proficiency with project and documentation tools such as AutoCAD, Procore, Bluebeam, Microsoft Project, Excel, and SharePoint are preferred
  • Exposure to trenchless, underground, or heavy civil construction is an asset
  • Experience supporting field crews or superintendents is valued

Responsibilities

  • Support the Project Manager with the planning, scheduling, and execution of trenchless construction activities on the Ballard Conveyance Project
  • Provide engineering and coordination support to active field operations
  • Prepare daily field reports, progress reports, and project status updates
  • Maintain accurate and well‑organized project documentation, logs, and tracking tools
  • Track and support engineering, geotechnical, and regulatory deliverables
  • Coordinate engineering deliverables and interface with Engineers of Record
  • Assist with project cost tracking, performance monitoring, and internal reporting
  • Record meeting minutes and support coordination meetings
  • Assist with regulatory submissions and permit tracking as required
  • Support the procurement and coordination of equipment and materials
  • Support active trenchless and underground construction operations in the field
  • Collect samples from the separation plant as required
  • Accurately document, label, and store samples in accordance with project and quality requirements
  • Support quality control and compliance activities related to field operations
  • Promote and uphold The Tunneling Company’s safety culture
  • Comply with site‑specific safety procedures and applicable regulatory requirements
  • Participate in safety meetings and raise safety or quality concerns when observed
  • Support quality assurance and adherence to project specifications
