Overview: The Project Engineer uses mechanical or chemical engineering skills to define, develop, and execute the technical scope and corresponding deliverables necessary and sufficient to deliver project goals. The Project Engineer works with the project team and stakeholders to ensure technical tasks are identified, assigned, prioritized, and completed, with technical accuracy and in accordance with the project charter. The Project Engineer works with project managers and reports to the Portfolio Manager. The Project Engineer supports the planning, design, execution, and turnover of mechanical capital projects within the plant focusing on manufacturing reliability, process improvement & optimization, documenting equipment requirements and specifications, plant modernization, and supporting contract negotiations and field execution. This role provides technical support for rotating equipment, piping, pressure vessels, utilities, process equipment, structural/mechanical systems, and related installations. The mechanical project engineer ensures the work is practical, safe, maintainable, and aligned with plant standards and operational needs. The Project Engineer collaborates with cross-functional engineers supporting projects as SMEs. The Project Engineer is accountable for cross-functional engineers’ project tasks getting completed on time, with accuracy and precision.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or chemical engineering, or related field, preferred
  • Experience with mechanical systems in industrial or process environments; Nitrogen-based fertilizer industry is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of piping, pumps, compressors, vessels, utilities, and mechanical installation practices.
  • Working knowledge and application of governing regulations, codes, and standards relative to the petrochemical industry.
  • Strong field coordination and technical problem-solving skills along with construction planning and field schedule development.
  • Demonstrated engineering skills valuating technical competencies of contractors, suppliers, and vendors, as they relate to proposal and quotation evaluation during vendor selection.
  • Willingness to work around dust, chemicals, high pressure, high temperature, loud noises, and running equipment.
  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in designated areas (fire retardant uniform, hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed boots, and hearing protection).
  • Must be able to lift at least 25 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Project Engineering: Become proficient in all areas of process and project evaluation, including process design, instrumentation and control, project deliverables definition, development, and management, project estimating, budget development, the capital funding process, and project change management.
  • Develop and support mechanical scopes of work, estimates, and project execution plans.
  • Coordinate with Operations and Maintenance to confirm maintainability and operability of designs.
  • Oversee/engineer assigned plant changes and perform project engineering responsibilities on in-house projects.
  • Advise on mechanical equipment specifications, plant modifications, and repairs.
  • Apply appropriate engineering standards in compliance with Federal/State codes and industry practice.
  • Verify that the work meets the design intent, codes, standards, and plant requirements.
  • Review drawings, specifications, calculations, and vendor documents for mechanical systems.
  • Participate in design, hazard, and constructability reviews.
  • Issue purchase requisitions and assist in the selection of equipment and vendors.
  • Review and select major equipment vendors.
  • Support equipment selection, procurement, installation, testing, and commissioning.
  • Monitor and advise on spare parts requirements and assist in planning plant turnaround activities.
  • Work with Project Managers on stakeholder engagement through technical progress reports on capital project planning, development, and execution.
  • Coordinate contractors and internal stakeholders during field execution.
  • Assist with field coordination, RFIs, punch lists, and construction issue resolution.
  • Assist with turnover documentation and asset handoff.
  • Perform other duties assigned.
  • Inspection: Working with the Mechanical Integrity Engineer, and while wearing appropriate PPE including hard hat, steel-toed boots, and fire-resistant uniform, monitor and inspect mechanical equipment during outage opportunities and turnarounds, and initiate action for repair, as necessary.
  • Oversee owner/user program for the site.
  • Inspect fabricated equipment at the vendor’s location to ensure compliance with specifications and schedule.
