About The Position

Johnson Controls invites you to join our Field Device Product Development Engineering team as a Project Engineer, contributing to the next generation of HVAC field devices that enable intelligent, energy-efficient buildings. This is a system-level engineering role, ideal for someone who wants to understand how hardware, firmware, software, and product requirements come together to form a complete solution. You’ll work across the full product lifecycle—shaping requirements, analyzing system behavior, supporting development and testing, and helping keep engineering activities aligned and moving forward. This position is 100% on-site at our new Controls Product Development Center and Lab in Glendale, WI, where you’ll collaborate closely with cross-disciplinary teams and work hands-on with real products. Candidates must be commuting distance to the office, or able to relocate.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, with 0–5 years of experience
  • Full-time, in-person role at the Warren Johnson Engineering Lab in Glendale, WI
  • No sponsorship available — must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Travel up to 20%
  • Coding experience in Python and C/C++; basic experience with GitHub
  • Strong understanding of electronics and proficiency with tools such as oscilloscopes and digital multimeters
  • Hands-on lab experience (debugging boards, flashing firmware, using logic analyzers)
  • Experience using JIRA or similar project/task management tools

  • Basic understanding of cloud computing and IoT devices
  • Advanced coding capabilities
  • Basic understanding of business and financial considerations in engineering projects
  • Experience with HVAC and/or Building Automation System

Responsibilities

  • Analyze product and project requirements from a system and product-level perspective
  • Gather, analyze, and report essential project data (requirements, engineering effort estimates, actual work hours, project costs, etc.)
  • Read and modify code as needed to support development activities
  • Perform engineering-level testing on embedded field device products; develop test software, report results, and propose improvements
  • Use JIRA to track engineering tasks, manage workflows, and support project planning and execution
  • Prepare and deliver reports and schedules for engineering development projects
  • Assist in preparing presentations for project plans, strategy, and timeline updates
  • Support Engineering Excellence and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Collaborate with a global engineering team to achieve project objectives
