About The Position

RK&K is seeking a highly skilled Traffic Engineer / Traffic Design Project Engineer with expertise in work zone traffic control, traffic control device design, and ITS applications. This role supports high‑impact projects through open‑end contracts with state and local agencies, contributing to safer, more efficient, and more technologically advanced transportation systems. You’ll collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, and help shape statewide policies, designs, and strategies that improve operations across all modes of travel. With growing emphasis on work zone safety, evolving Federal and State requirements, and the rapid integration of new technologies, we are expanding our team to meet increasing demand.

Requirements

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related
  • Four (4) to eight (8) years of experience in traffic engineering, traffic design, and work zone traffic control (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Good writing, verbal communication and presentation skills including public speaking and the ability to present technical information to clients, agencies, and stakeholders
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities, with the ability to use data and research to inform decision making
  • Strong understanding of MUTCD requirements, traffic control device design, and temporary traffic control principles
  • Experience preparing traffic signal, signing, pavement marking, lighting, and ITS design plans
  • Proficiency with traffic engineering and design software (e.g., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Synchro, HCS, GIS, or similar tools)
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment and manage multiple tasks or projects simultaneously
  • Commitment to staying current with emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices in traffic engineering and work zone operations

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and analysis on work zone traffic control methodologies, principles, products, and applications
  • Develop work zone policies, guidelines, standards, specifications, and training materials to enhance safety, consistency, and operational efficiency
  • Review Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) plans for major projects, ensuring safe accommodation of workers, motorists, and vulnerable road users
  • Evaluate existing work zone standards and traffic control plans to identify opportunities for improvement
  • Support Work Zone Speed Safety Camera programs, including program management, implementation, performance assessment, and quality assurance
  • Plan, design, and implement ITS work zone applications to improve traveler information and real‑time operations
  • Develop and implement traffic engineering strategies to optimize transportation systems, including traffic signals, signing, pavement markings, intersection design, and planning studies
  • Prepare design plans and documentation for traffic control devices: traffic signals, signing, pavement markings, lighting, temporary traffic control, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)
  • Support multimodal projects involving highways, transit, bicycle, and pedestrian facilities in urban, suburban, and rural environments
  • Prepare technical reports, perform quality control reviews, and ensure accuracy and integrity of engineering deliverables
  • Present technical concepts and project recommendations to clients, agencies, and public stakeholders
  • Stay current with advancements in traffic engineering practices, technology, and industry trends
